bit of a strange question, but when i buy a record i often find it has been enscribed by someone, say their name or group.
do any of you do this, or have you? if so what names have you used on your records, it would be interesting to see if i have any records that have been owned by one or you..

wid a number 1 written pon di lower side

im tring 2 seach 4 some origainl press - still - anyway

As a bit of a purist I detest writing on labels, or sleeves.

But a friend of mine used to write his name and the date he aquired an LP on the INNER sleeve. And lo and behold, last year I purchased an Album - Message From the King by Prince Far I - and there was his signature and the date! I guess the reggae world is even smaller than the regular world!

So if you have an inner sleeve with 'Nigel Page' signed on it, PLEASE let me know.

And Nigel, if you're still out there, PM me!

i usually write my son's initials M N on the labels and the blanks i color them red,gold, and green. as for the album or 12" sleeves if blank, i'll put the info i know about it ig : prod / mixed @/ band / year/etc.

Always write a "R" on represses...

Yes, the sound is MOST important. But if it was ONLY the sound that was important then wouldn't all the disks come in plain sleeves with plain labels?

come on now leggo, not everything i get is spotless. iget records already marked and stamped too, besides soundmen have been doing it for years, and you really can't stop it now. so as for the blanks i like to color them or sometimes you have the black blank labels as well. and you're right litelet sound is very important when purchasing records from any source. and i'll listen to your show to hear whaa gwaan.

Yes Dudley, not much out there has escaped this writing thing. So much of my present collection is unfortunately written on.

BUT I've had a sleepless night imagining you guys getting VINTAGE vinyl that's clean and then writing on the labels.

You don't do THAT now do you? That would be like burning dollar bills!

OK, write on your represses, but please tell me you don't do it on original pressings!

A little explanation. I am an artist - I spent from age 21 to 30 painting in watercolour for a living. Then I spent the last 15 years writing and photographing for and editing magazines (and latterly websites).

So, for me, it is natural to see the label and cover artwork as just that - ARTWORK. So to doodle on it is just completely wrong to me. I just couldn't do it.
