Sonny Bins & the Ethnic Fight Band, FIGHT label

by utodd
Ganja Special
African Gold Dust
Tribesman Skank
Patches
b/w
Mash Up Yard
Jah Serenade
Fracture Ribs
Broke Jaw

arr. and prod. by Larry Lawrence
no year, no musicians

I recognize ridims to Jah Martin's Club Dread, which Sonny overlays with a classic Perry/ Lawrence Western riff, tremendous and effortless
-also an organ take on Truly
-and an organ on You Don't Care
-also one track w/ Sonny on melodica, poss. to a Sidney rogers song? extra classic

Sylvan Morris, Reggae Workshop on B&M

Reggae Workshop
Hook Rock
Reggae in the Cool
Ultimate Effect
Reggae in Harmony
b/w
Musical Combination
Spinning Wheel
Ready Rock
Reggae in Phaze
Rebel Mood

Engineer & sound effects by Sylvan Morris
no release date, musicians or artists
occasional vox,, some heavily phaseshifted Black Ark-like recordings, mostly roots tracks but some tend to countrywestern and disco rockers
one track w/ skindrums & 'bone

Richard Ace, Richard Ace on Atlantic (WEA)

looks like WEA controlled Warner Brothers, Elektra and Atlantic labels at this time, 1979, prod. by (Prince)Tony Robinson

Stayin' Alive
If I Can't Have You
Ghetto Nation
You're the One That I Want
b/w
Substitute
She's Gone
I Need You
I Forgive You

I can't remember what famous artist said Richard Ace was Jamaican's best vocalist, but he certainly may be JA's best soul vocalist. He literally sets the mark for true disco-reggae on this lp, covering many U.S. standards. His take on Marley's She's Gone is over the top and out the yard and also occurs as a TR Groovemaster twelve. And for roots/sufferers sounds, he gives forth Ghetto Nation which has a credit to Toy Robinson but seem to me was a massive funk hit by... you know, uh...

Roland Alphonso, Brighter Shade of Roots, Imperial (CN)

by utodd
prod. Bunny Lee, no date, no musicians besides Roland

Brighter Shade of Roots
Drum Song Style
Sentimental Rockers
Roots of Rockers
b/w
It's All in the Game Rockers
Lets Do Lovers Rock
Yellow Bird Style
Let's Fall in Love Style
Island in the Sun Rockers

pretty much classic Aggrovators instrumentals slowed down and soloed sentimentally by Rolando, though someone blows a fat trumpet on one of 'em, Bobby Ellis? No Cornell or Johnny vox, they must've stepped out for air. Drum Song is the standout, has that night peeper effect that's on other mixes too.

Nora Dean, Play me A Love Song, Nationwide (UK)

C.Reid (Duke Reid Jr.) prod., no date, no musicians

My Heart Desire
Don't Let Me Know
Written All Over Your Face
Ever Know About Him
Caught in a Trap
b/w
Never Be Mine
Dry Up Your Tears
No Time to Loose
Beautiful Morning
Play Me A Love Song

side one disappoints with slowdance-like ballads, but by Caught in A Trap, (ironically) you start to hear the lovers rock potential, which IS fully realized on the b-side. Though I want always to bump the turntable speed, the album ends with 3 absolutely sublime songs, like Sunday Mass on Orange Street.
