i recently got a 12" from a seller in JA and the record is like all oily and not glossy at all.... i was wondering if anyone knows of anything that can clean vinyl good.... i know that i can buy record solution or whatever but doesn anyone know of any other ways.... let me know...thanks.

If you want to prperly clean vinyl you need a wet / suction combo cleaner. If you clean records dry you are damaging them. If you clean them wet without vacuum the dirt won't be pulled out of the grooves and will simply settle again once dry.

I've been using a MOTH RCM for more than a year now and have used it to clean around 2,000 records.

The difference from before and after is astounding. It is perhaps the most significant part of my sound system, as no matter how good my deck amp and speakers are (actually they are pretty middle of the road!) it's all wasted if the record is dirty.

I've bought many records that have come with lots of surface noise or even jumps and sticks. Only to eradicate most surface noise and have made many, many records play through that previously would not play without problems.

I use the Pro - the difference between Pro and Standard is air cooling. If you're going to use it a lot, you need the cooling.

Won't be able to smoke in the pubs soon in the uk, cant have a smoke when listening to my records, it looks like I am going to have to learn how to cook cakes

Forgot to add. I don't use the alchohol type cleaner that comes with the MOTH, it smells too much and means you have to clean with doors and windows open, not easy in the middle of a British City in Winter!

Instead I use L'Art Du Son cleaning fluid, which comes concentrated and needs to be diluted with distilled water (NEVER use ordinary water as it is full of scale).

I've noticed a oily residue on some records I've bought. And my strong sense of smell has a pretty good idea what kind of oily it is. Perhaps I shouldn't clean my records until I've let them stand in hot water for an hour or so. Then I could drink the water and get mellow!

BUT - I've also noticed some residue on some records that look like maybe the sound man have sneezed all over them!

So maybe the vinyl-herbal-tea idea isn't such a good one!

I use the RCM pro too, can confirm it being an excellent cleaning machine. Costs quite a bit but its an investment as you probabilly wont ever need to buy another.

Only wish it was a little quieter, thought about ways to make it quieter but not acted on them. Any ideas leggo?

I have also used wi-fi cordless earphones so I can listen to reggae music while cleaning!
