For early Gregory, get:

Mr Isaacs

this LP is a real killa, and the dub version Leggo Dub is also an essential pick.

Both are on CD, if you prefer that medium, Leggo Dub having been rereleased on the rather good Hot Pot label.

If you liked Night Nurse, then you should also check Red Rose For Gregory - it's a fine example of his later work. Ruff n Tuff stuff coming on the cusp of the Ragga revolution. I absolutely LOVE this LP, it's one of the best examples of late 80's reggae.

My personal favourite:

Extra Classic Plus http://www.roots-archives.com/release/560

Some lovely riddims particularly - My Religion, Dreadlocks Love Affair and Rasta Business.

(and with a bit of jiggery pokery on your PC you can make your own 12" / extended version CD )

;)

I agree, especially Mr Cop, what a schorcher that track is.

You have to be careful with Extra Classic, some of the pressings are awful! I forget which are the good and which are the bad, I will have to check my record box as I have a number of different pressings of this one.

Dunno what the Trojan CD is like for mastering. Probably also awful...

Really hard to choose some LPs from the pre Roots Radics part of Gregory's career. Gregory recorded so much good stuffs...

The must have IMHO are:

"Extra Classic" (Conflict)

"Mr Issacs" (DEB)

"Showcase" (Taxi)

In fact most of the early LPs are really good and you can't go wrong if you add to this list the two "Best Of" on GG and "Cool Ruler" and "Soon Forward" both on Virgin label.

Leggo > the good pressing of "Extra Classic" is the original on Conflict. I have this press and before I had the one on Echo label which is very average in term of sound quality. The presses on Micron or Cindy (which aparently use the same stampers) are said to be OK, but I never listened to one of them.

There are also two presses noyt list here: one on Vista Sounds (I assume it use the Echo stampers) and on on a label called Shark which I don't know.
