Joe Gibbs and the Professionals: SLR

This is one of my all-time favourite tracks and I have finally managed to buy a 7" copy via ebay, more than 20 years after hearing the 12" at a friend's house.

Does anyone know anything about this track? What does SLR stand for? Are there any other tracks that use the same riddim?

Thanks for any help!

My copy of SLR is on the flip side of Massacre (aka Green Bay Killing) by Nigger Kojak and unless mine is mislabled (which it might be)the rhythm is Storm of which there are way over 100 versions.

Rob - could you recommend any other versions of the Storm rhythm for me to track down?

Many thanks!

kilimanbongo,

You could start with the the original "Storm" by Gregory Isaacs. Two other well known cuts are:

Tapper Zukie - "Launch An Attack"
Horace Andy - "Hang On to Jah"

These rhythm sites will give you lots more

Thanks Rob!

Here's a funny thing - the 7" version of Massacre/SLR I ordered from ebay has just arrived, but the SLR is not the track I was expecting.

When I heard the 12" way back in 1979, the SLR was a completely different rhythm/song to the Nigger Kojak track, but on this 7", the B side is a dub version of Massacre! I'm confused! Why should the labels of the 7 and 12 be the same, but the tracks on the b sides are completly different?

Can anyone help me out?

I've got both the 7" and the 12" versions so I'll check it out but from memory one of the "B" sides is mistitled and is in fact a Mikey Dread song called "Friend & Money" on the Money In My Pocket rhythm.

Was it the rhythm track to "Massacre" you were enquiring about because that is definitely Storm?

I'll be back once I've checked the 7" & 12 " versions.

Cheers

Rob

OK here we go:

Laser - LAS 3 - 7" single
Side One "Massacre" by Nigger Kojak
side Two "SLR" by Joe Gibbs & The Professionals (this is a version of Massacre and they are both on the "Storm" rhythm)

Laser - Las 3(T) - 12" Single
Side One "Massacre" by Nigger Kojak
Side Two Mistitled "SLR" but is clearly "Friend & Money" by Mikey Dread on the "Money In My Pocket" rhythm.

Hope this is helpful. Unless there is another SLR I haven't heard, I'm fairly certain that the correct SLR is the flip side of the 7" (i.e. the dub of Massacre on the Storm rhythm).

If it is the flip side of the 12" you remembered, you can get Friend & Money on the CD "Original DJ Classics Vol. 2 From Joe Gibbs Library"
