Hi John Public,

I reckon the producer was Karl Pitterson who produced their album "Uptown Top Ranking" which was released in 1978 just like the 12" "Going To Negril". Both were released on Front Line / Virgin.

If you like "Going To Negril" check out Devon Irons "Jerusalem" on Pressure Sounds. It's the same great riddim.

Greetings

Little question about Althea & Donna's Uptown Top Ranking album...
So this LP was first issued on Front Line / Virgin:
[cover=7810,162]
I think that there has been also an other issue on the *Ranking* label. Does anyone have more informations on this record? JA/US/UK?
Not a to usual label according to the RA website.

I think you are right on that Leswoodies.

I am sure I have seen this LP on a different label, a JA label if memory serves me. No idea if it was before the Virgin cut or after.

I bought the single when I was a kid and I swear it was on **[Lightning](http://www.roots-archives.com/label/231)**.
B-side if I remember rightly was "Calico Suite" by The Mighty Two.
Produced by Joe Gibbs/Errol Thompson.

Not sure if that helps or hinders! :)

I have Althea and Donna's Going To Negril/The West on Virgin Front Line 7" and I'm very glad someone else has spotted Scratch's handiwork on it at last. That means there's two of us for everyone to throw bricks at now John!

The only explanation I can give is that I once heard Lee Perry was in the habit of paying debts with rhythm tracks when he had no money and music biz lenders came around.

So admittendly it's very doubtful anyone could categorise this (Going To Negril only) as a Scratch production, but you can clearly hear some of his traditional sound effects in the background.

This was never out on Lightning 7" though. Calico Suit was on the B-side of Uptown Top Ranking on that label.

Apologies if I didn't myself clear, but I was referring to the "Uptown Top Ranking" single in response to the posts by Leswoodies and Leggo Rocker.
I now realise I should have quoted their posts.
My post obviously did hinder as opposed to help. Sorry about that. :)

Oh don't worry 6a, def no hindrance - I'm always getting hold of the wrong end of the stick! At least we're all agreed (so far).
