Tidal Wave (Unicorn, 1983)

I bought this album some time ago and from initially just liking two or three track I now think it's an incredible record. The deejays Louie Rankin and Nicodemus are in exceptional form and the vocalists Bobby Culture and Brimstone & Fire likewise. Every single song is a star!
However I would like to know a little more about the vocalists. From what I've understood Bobby Culture has passed away after falling victim to the effects of hard drugs. Did he record any more records worth checking out?
Brimstone & Fire I've never heard of before and the odd name makes me a bit unsure if it's a vocal group or just one guy (it's sounds like just one guy with perhaps just a little backing song). Any more info on this guy (or guys)?
The album;

Can't add any info re: the artists Kal - but thanks for the reminder @ this LP.
Classic cover. Prophecy revealing? What is that, a mean looking eagle with an olive branch? Twin Towers gone already?
Similar to your experience, at first I didn't think too much about the songs, then replayed it and liked some of them, who knows, must replay again, might enjoy them all

Greetings, I am amazed to find this tidbit online!! I am actually the babymother of Bobby Culture. To set the record straight, he never indulged in hard drugs. Ganja smoker, YES, by all means. He was an excellent artist in his day. He actually only found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some people he considered to be close friends, were hustling in Baltimore. He was there for a short period of time and was shot in a robbery in the head behind his ear. I cannot speak more highly of any individual I have ever known. He was a charismatic beautiful man full of creativity and humor. I would be happy to give any information you would like in regard to him. He passed away very untimely on March 16, 1994. He originally dj'ed for Jack Ruby Hi Fi out of Ocho Rios. He had a few decent hits in Jamaica in 1982-1983. He has a few 12" singles from that era on the Claypot label out of Miami. One is on the "Norwegian Wood" Beatles rhythm and is definitely a great song lyrically, musically and melodically. I have about every tune he ever recorded and would be happy to help you with anymore info you'd like. Nicodemus also has passed away due to health complications. Louie Rankin has moved more toward acting and has had several roles, including a memorable one in the movie "Belly". Brimstone is still singing and last I know of was in Northern California. He is a brilliant singer, but has a wicked attitude. You can ask anybody who knew Fitzloyd Billings aka Bobby Culture, and they will tell you he is one of the most irie individuals they ever knew. He never used drugs, but definitely mingled with people who pushed them as a means to fast cash. Feel free to write if you'd like more info. Amazed to have read your message!! Julie Mango aka (Chuloops, according to Bobby Culture)

Going back and reading your original message, I saw your question about Brimstone & Fire. It is one person who generally goes by the name of Brimstone. He is a world class singer, but has had various drug issues and a continual need for an attitude adjustment. Back in the day, he used to try to push Yellowman off of the soundtruck of Jack Ruby's saying he didn't want any "yellow boys" around. As I said he's an amazing singer to this day, but has a impossible time getting along with other people that has virtually hindered his career. Check of Singers and Players of Instruments tune on that album, it's one of the best tracks. He and Bobby Culture came to America together on a musical tour with Jack Ruby producer. There were many artists along on that trip, including Jack Ruby and his wife, Lui Lepke, and many other artists. In all, I think it was 11 on that trip and out of the 11, only 2 of the people are still alive. A lot of people have speculated that it was somehow cursed. Anyway, like I said, please contact for any additional information. Glad to hear that the music created by this group of young aspiring artists is still being listened to.

Brimstone, or Brimstone & Fire, was initially known as Jah Stone, did two LPs and singles as Jah Stone like Ten Ton Woman, Militant Dread, etc
He can be seen here at Roots Archives
He's still in CA.

Bobby Culture pieces are few from what I can gather kalcidis. I do have a US pressed LP of him (name escapes me right now) but it is a really poor set with crap riddims. I mean real bad !
The one you must look out for is a 12" of him on a green UK pressed "Leggo" label. The A side is called "Health & Strength" and the flip side is a track called "Beunos Dias". This 12" is peer MURDER man and will drop head on in any dance. A real scorcher.
I did see a cut of it on ebay about 6 months ago so keep your eye out for it.

Julie, I'd love to ask you some questions about Bobby Culture. Please contact me at
kalcidis@hotmail.com
Dadi Digi; Thanks for the advice! Will definitely check it out!
J.D.; the matrix is
UNIC - 9510 - A
UNIC - 9510 - B
I'm not too much in the mood to do a scan of the back though. Takes too much time. If it's very important I can always sort it out.

Yes Dadi, you did indeed see it. And if you want to hear it, you'll have to come to one of my DJ gigs (I played it at my last show and it's in back my box for the next gig) or listen to my radio station .... because I was the winning bidder that day!
And you are so right, this one is 100% a killa.
