I may be old-school but I can't understand why people are attracted by myspace... most of time there is no info, the pages look horrible, full of commercials, etc...

Could anyone tell me what's the point ?

+1...I have to agree. Seems absolutely pointless.
Droves of attention starved individuals, generating very little positive.
Add the 7 deadly, which are clearly present and you have a yourself a scary place.
Can anyone say " Bankrupt Morality"?

Another theory I believe is that it's a giant test set up to see how naive the masses are.
A huge marketing scheme if you will. Monitoring the globe. Kinda' like 'YouTube inna sense.

The older generation is lost and is need of constant ideas to corrupt/sell/profit off the youths. They find their answers in the web through statistics like hits/web visits.

The younger generation miss-uses it as a sense of fulfillment, lacking KOS (knowledge of self) they wander, following who/what they see.
I don;t believe it's about keeping in contact with people/family but more of a popularity contest and exercise in folly.

I have a page, not sure why. But I've never 'pimped' it and tend to agree with the thread.

For me it's frustratingly poorly executed (technically and aesthetically).

And yes, whatever it started as, it is now just another Babylon marketing bulldozer. No surprise really, after all the Babylon Shitstem managed to hijack both Punk Rock and Reggae music to serve the Goddess of Greed - and can you get any more anti-establishment than punk or reggae?

But perhaps my daughters ought to be replying to this thread - as they spend hours on it!

OK - I have to offer an alternative opinion here. Sure, most myspace pages are pointless drivel. However, the specialist Music MySpace pages for bands such as mine, are a fantastic resource. Not only is there loads of music out there for you to discover (and often download legally for free), they are a great tool for networking with other bands. I only succumbed to myspace about two months ago (prior to discovering they did special pages for bands, I saw no point either!). Since then I have only added friends who are relevant to the page and the music, I'm not interested in adding a billion idiot 'friends' who i have nothing in common with! These friends are generally music contacts. Studios, pressing plants, other bands, labels etc would be the main type, along with any 'fans' of my music who want to keep abreast of developments and get free tracks every now and again.
I have connected with at least 3 bands who we can gig with via myspace, sold a few copies of my CD and got a contact for some DJ work.
That, for me, is the point of a Myspace page!

MightyZ: Definitely a valid point and I totally agree..."for musicians" it's a great outlet.
Not many free avenues with that much exposure.
Congrats on your success found there!!!
I've heard and seen very similar stories...musicians discovered, gig & label signings etc...

Side note:
I've been called bitter for my remarks posted here.
My comments in no way were directed towards "OUR" upfull members on "RA" but the seeming majority.
I hope that was evident in my post...just making sure.

MySpace can be used as a really good (but casual) networking tool. I can stay loosely in touch with a lot of different people, which has allowed me to even get a new job by contacting old acquaintances. If enough people you are loosely in touch with (or just old friends that you haven't talked to in a while) are members of the site, it's easy to stay connected. Sure the interface(s) could be designed better and more efficiently, but the most important aspect of a social networking site is a very large number of peers, imho. Myspace is currently the largest, hence it is the easiest to stay connected with a largest number of people. There's a lot of other cases people use it for, mostly resolving to love and lust, but that a bit too 'modern' for my needs. I think it will be up to a new, drastically better, social networking site to persuade current myspace users to leave and join a new community. In fact, that's what happened during the migration from Friendster to MySpace.

Matthew - i don't see a problem with what you have said - I think that you have hit the nail on the head as far as the reasons for things like myspace being launched. However, it is often the case that something created for bad reasons can be turned to good use - for example, much technological development originates in a desire for military supremacy, but the things that are learnt from that development often find their way into medicine and consumer technology in a more positive way. Much of the geometry developed during the 18th and 19th century was led by military needs (getting your artillery to hit the target!) - but now it has been used for many positives, such as making faster and cooler vehicles, and most importantly Video games

the only thing i dont like about myspace is the list of friends people have...
other then that its a good easy space for the average person to advertise themselves,business,intersts..so on
