WHAT IF AUGUSTUS PABLO, HUGH MUNDELL AND JUNIOR REID COULD HAVE CONTINUED THEIR MUSIC CAREER TOGETHER, THEY WOULD..................(YOU FINISH IT)

Well... Junior Reid is still alive and making music. So was Pablo up until '99. Those two chose to go their separate ways apparently.

As for Mundell & Pablo, I guess you would have to listen to the riddims Pablo was cutting in the 90's, then imagine Mundell singing over them... as far as I'm concerned, not a very impressive fantasy. It would pale in comparison to their previous work.

In my opinion, the general trend in reggae is that artists peak and then take a nosedive in terms of material, usually within 10 years or less. It's very rare to find an artist with real staying power. Off the top of my head, it's hard to think of many artists who got better as the years and albums went by.

Thank Jah that Scratch burned down the Black Ark while he still had the chance! :)

indeed Junior Reid is still active, as for the other 2 R.I.P, Hugh Mundell was one of the most blessed singers, and Augustus Pablo productions as well.

Well... if you think of the Work between Pablo and Jr Delgado... Was Terrific in the 70s... Blackman Heart... Aways With Your Fussing and Fighting...

Getting weaker in 86 (One More Step LP)
and even weaker in the 90s (Showcase)

Who knows, maybe Mundell's presence would have changed this evolution...

I don't think many things would be really different regarding Mundell. Simply because the Mundell/Pablo collaboration ended before Mundell's death. Don't know why they stop working together progressivly. I remember reading that Mundell was looking for a greater eposition to the international market and pablo don't have the link. Not sure about the story tho'.

Just consider that "Africa Must Be Free" was release on a UK and US label by 1986, 8 years after the Jamaican press... Of course the Mundell LP has been massivly pressed in Jamaican, but it's not the same exposure as a UK labeled LP. I remember a discussion I had with a non reggae fan who heard about the "Africa Must..." LP in 78. He can't find it anywher in France (even thought I assume it was available at Concrete Jungle in Paris, the first French reggae shop but only known by the reggae fans) and he had to cross the Channel and buy an expensive copy in one of the many London reggae shop... The Mundell LP, before Greensleeves issued it, was in fact hard to obtain in many countries with only one or two shop having few copies.

So, by the very late 70's Mundell produced himself his music with still a kinda of Pablo sound because the musicians were the Pablo's one. He straight released it in UK. And by the early 80's he moved defenitly from the Pablo crew and joined Jammy (Jah Fire LP) and later Junjo (for the "Mundell" LP). Both producers had connections with English labels. When you listen to the "Mundell" LP produced by Junjo, you have "classic" early dancehall and nothing really special. At least nothing special if you consider the tunes produced by Pablo which are defenitly "special".

So to my eyes, the Pablo / Mundell collaboration ended about 3 years before Mundell death. Of course we may think they would have team up again later, but nothing sure. We simply can't re-write the story.

so:

have done nothing more IMO, as the COULDN'T HAVE CONTINUED cause they stop the collaboration by 78 ou 79... :D

lionyouth, Time & Place is the selfproducted LP I mention. Pablo didn't produced it, but the musicians are the one who worked with Pablo. Thus the similiar sound...

ok you are right he didn't produce it, but pablo arranged the album...so there was a little bit of pablo influence.

I was thinking about what tingjunkie said, "it's hard to think of many artists who got better as the years and albums went by" and I always wondered, Why so many "classic" performers went digital (specially in the 90's) even when they were not aiming the Jamaican audience, so they were not successful in the JA market neither in the rest of the world market. There is plenty of bad digital albums from so many of the artists that we all love. One exception is, for example, Twinkle Bros, who moved from Jamaica and continued playing their roots reggae to the audiences that do enjoyed it.

Just a thought...
