Jah Guidance Record LAbel- who runs it?

HAs anyone got a clue or any story behind who runs the Jah Guidance Record Label?

My initial guess early in my collecting days was Junjo, but now I have many original press LP's and 12" discos on this label and I have noticed several different producers...Henry Junjo LAwes, Linval Thompson and Winston Niney Holness.

Who does this label belong to? Does anyone have any insight about this great record label? And now many titles have been repressed or revived on this label, with one of the original logos(in black & white), and we all know it is not Junjo.....

(brainstorming)Linval or Niney perhaps?...I wouldn't think so cause they would just put it on thier own labels(Thompson Sound/Observer). Don't you think?

Please share your thoughts...aDam

I do understand that the label is distributed by VP records and that they carry the VP catalog matrix (VPRL/VPRD). Thank you for those infos about who owns VP.

But I also understand that there are many producers that use VP distribution for thier labels as thier USA outlet, yet they still retain ownership of thier labels...Jammy's, Midnight rock, Volcano, Exterminator...for example. (there are many more, but can't think now)

Is it that these producers sold the music or the rights to the music to VP? I'm pretty sure that these labels are NOT subsidiaries of VP?

Seems that VP is both a distributor and a record label...as they not only distribute music from other producers and labels, but they put out music on thier own label (VP music).

It is possible that at the time of pressing, VP owned the rights that have since then been relinqished...and that they used the labels respective to the producers to give them proper production credit, and to help sell the record with ad populum. This is strictly speculatory though.

Does anyone know what I am talking about.? ADam

pretty sure it's not VP. such that the recent 7" represess aren't from vp, nor distributed by them.

I would have to agree, and this is why I ask the question...who is behind the label...and additionally...who is behind the more recent repress...?
Wouldn't the more recent repress bear the VP Logo or matrix if they were behind it? ADam

PS MAybe Ernie B could answer or help with this...

the original Jamaican JAH GUIDANCE label belonged to Junjo and was distributed by Randy's.

when VP started up in New York, Jah Guidance became one of the first labels that VP established what is known in the independent music business as a "P&D" (production & distribution) deal with. this is when a big label or distributor handles the manufacturing and distribution of a label owned/controlled by someone else. this is often beneficial for both parties for various reasons of efficiency and better production costs.

once VP started doing P&D for Jah Guidance, other producers work was also issued on the label. can't say why this happened for certain, but it's likely because the label was already popular, and because VP wasn't producing so many other labels yet at the time.

as VP grew they established P&D deals with dozens and dozens of labels (historically, probably well over 100 labels). because of this these records often have VP catalog/matrix numbers, but not always.

as for the current JAH GUIDANCE 7" represses, i've heard that it is Linval Thompson who is doing them, as he apparently came into posession of many of Junjo's mastertapes. I guess all things considered, it could be worse, with Linval being Junjo's 'mentor' of sorts and all that.

as for the Jah Guidance LP's just reissued on CD by VP, I assume VP retained the rights to these recordings as part of the deal at the time of their original issue. All the albums in question were issued by VP in the USA only, during the JG/VP partnership.

while we're on the subject i'd really love for someone (hopefully VP) to reissue the SCIENTIST "In Dub Volume 1" LP.
