Can someone person, or group of people take on writing an intro to Roots, or perhaps suggest a link? i.e. Origins, styles, riddims, anthology, inspirations, political motivations, specific eras or turning points, and of course artists. I have have had this music glowing in my mind since I was a child but I don't know what i'm listening to, only that I hear it deeper than in my ears.

I only started to listen to Bob Marley towards the end of high-school. As a child I remember rummaging through some old boxes left behind from an aunt who had moved away. A single mixed tape in that box changed how I felt about music forever! All I knew of the world was my own neighborhood let alone where in the world Jamaica was. My special tape was mixture of a nameless type of music for many years. By the time I was in high-school I understood that it was Reggae and occasionally I'd hear it playing out a window in the neighborhood, at market places, during music festivals in the park, and occasionally on the radio in the middle of the night. Now I want to know more about the "roots" or roots. Regardless of where I've been in the world I always come across people who feel a connection with Reggae (even those who don't speak english). Now I have lots of music, but I don't know much about it, who are the artists, how were/are they perceived in the community, by their peers, by the industry? This website has been very helpful in filling in some basic knowledge gaps, but I need something simpler, I was considering getting Fabrizio Lagana's book but was wondering if there was something else out there.

Requiem,

You may want to try to start with some of the books listed in this previous post.
