Rockers Almighty Dub

I picked this up (vinyl, on Clocktower) thinking it was in some way a King Tubby album, but it's not really, is it? As far as I can tell, it was partly mixed at King Tubby's, but other than that... what is this album? No doubting the quality of the musicians credited (Pablo, Sly & Robbie, Family Man, etc.), but 'Remixed by: Brad Osborne' doesn't look too encouraging -- isn't he just the label chief? What's he doing remixing these tracks?

So, my question: is this a legit record or would you put it down as a dodgy release?

Not sure where it stands on validity but it is one of the best dub LPs in my collection!

This is a legitimate LP that was released on King Tubby Clocktower label.

However, this album is also available with the Abraham inprint with the head on the back cover.

From what I have read about Abraham I would assume that would not be a legitimate release.

And yes, it is a wicked album.

Actually it quotes remixed by Brad Osbourne, Ossie Hibbert, Pat Kelly, Dougles Levy at King (Tubbys) Studio, Joe Gibbs & Bullwackies Studio.

Most of it sounds to me like King Tubbys Studio with likely Pat Kelly at the controls, he has oft been overlooked as an engineer at Tubby`s studio, but was likely to have been responsible for quite a bit of output that eroneously gets acredited to King Tubby himself. On the album i would say Ossie Hibbert is responsible for Storm & Lightning, Freedom Joy Dub and Upful & Positive Dub, they have a different mix style and sound. I could not hear anything much of Bullwackies on any mix so maybe it was just edited and mastered there by Douglar Levy. Credits dont always mean as they seem on reggae albums.

As an album its as legitimate as any other, and its not quoted as a King Tubbys album. Brad Osbourne seemed financially capable of releasing albums, and with running his Brads Record Den in NY he likely came across many artists, musicians and producers as they passed through, making it easy for him to negotiate such releases, and of course he`s very likely to make sure his name is well associated in the credits.

Pat Kelly is indeed one of the unsung heroes of reggae.

Thanks, Stoneman, for providing some context re: this LP! I don't feel so dirty listening to it now. ;)

Must confess I'd never even heard of Pat Kelly before, though. Was he always working at King Tubby's?
