Brethren i have been reading up on this album but can`t seem to find enough reviews on the web to urge me to buy it.

So massive i ask if you could give a insight into this album`s style,how does it sound,is there vocal within it and most important is it worth getting.Thanks

Word of warning though - the sound effects aren't to everyone's taste!

What type of sound affects are there in this album.Has it gone overboard with them or are they just strange and distinctive.

Of the top of my head - dogs barking, babies crying and water flowing down a plug hole. I really don't like it, but I can assure you I am in the minority.

Sounds intresting,i`m feeling like i should get this album now due it`s rather unorthodox style.

Please add some more thoughts of your view on this album.

All I will add is that if you like the tracks with animal effects on "African Anthem" and "Cry Tuff Chap 2" then you'll love this.

Thats reggae for you, definatey one of the madder album dub albums of the 70`s.

6anbatte is of course right. This is the first dub LP I had ever heard back in 1978. Previously the only reggae records I had heard were Kaya by Marley and Steel Pulse Handsworth Revolution.

The LP is indeed populated with plenty of sound effects but I don't think they interfere in the same way as some of the annoying sirens and silly synth drums on some other LPs. And they don't cover the music, they enhance it. Like on Doberman Skank where the dog barks are used as an instrument - and one laden with effects! It's great! I actually think that some people who have dismissed it because of these sound effects might do well to give it another try, it's a very infectious LP.

Yeah, maybe this LP is madder than a box of frogs but it is real roots rock reggae dub just the same.

The list of effects also includes a strange rubber band twanging noise and a vintage car horn! There's also some great false starts to a couple of the tracks which serves to illustrate how these tracks were laid down - not instrument by instrument as was the way for 'western' music in the day (and still is) but basically by the band playing 'live' in the studio.

The riddims are super solid. The bass is dreader than dread and the drums tighter than tight. I've always found it a brilliant LP to listen to when driving long distance, as the tunes just seem to help you along, munching up the miles.

Given that it is now cheaply available on CD (Hotpot) with some really good bonus tracks I can't see what excuse you'd have for not buying it. Not long ago the original press vinyl would easily fetch 200 US dollars.

It's also worth bearing in mind that this LP hit the top of the reggae charts when it was released, even though it wasn't being pushed by the likes of Island or Virgin.

So what are you waiting for, haven't you bought it yet!

Oh and don't forget to pick up a copy of Mr Isaacs, the vocal version. This is a killer, one of the cool ruler's best. Then you can make up some wikkid showcase tracks tapes.
