An eye opening reality especially on the global issues. The deaths of over 27 000 children today is just unacceptable and the section about poverty facts and stats is just unbelievable and sad.

Brethren the world is a tough and unfair place to live in at times, especially for the unfortunate people of this world.

Peace.

The suffering of starving people vexed me greatly as a young teenager. Then I saw a documentary about it on the BBC way back in the 70s hosted by respected broadcaster David Dimbleby (or was it brother Richard?). It was in two or three parts from memory. As it progressed Dimbleby discovered the link between the production and consumption of meat and world hunger. It was enough to make him turn vegetarian.

Sadly, when he asked people coming out of butcher's shops in England if they'd give up meat given this revelation very very few answered yes. Although I wonder how many of them could continue their meat eating if they actually had to a: kill and render the beast and b: eat it in front of the child they were helping to starve.

Go here and educate yourself on how you can very easily do your bit to fight world hunger (let alone alleviate the appalling suffering of the animals).

Meat production is also the REAL reason behind the destruction of most of the world's vital rain forests. It has little to do with logging as most of the forest is simply burned to the ground. And I wonder how many people realise that much of the world's plunge toward desertification is another unfortunate side effect of meat production.

Right on Leggo, vegetarianism is the way, sounds like you been studying at the OU. They teach all that stuff in the Introduction to Environmental Studies level 1 course.

leggo, you hit it right on the head, man.
the destruction of this planet has many roots to it. yet, our overzealous demand for beef and other animal products is absolutely dangerous to this planet. i admit taht i am no longer vegan after 17 years for health reasons (i now eat chicken and fish), i will only eat organic chicken that is locally raised, only within 3 hours of my doorstep. i refuse to contribute to deforestation, massive oil consumption (how do you think the farming, processing, and delivery machines work?).
another thing to consider, with farming at least, is:
cotton, the number one most destructive product on the planet. not the plant itself, but the pesticides used, the oil used, and herbicides used. then on top of that the freaking demand for cotton is waaaaaay too high! too many clothing brands out there (old navy/gap is just an example of babylon system clothing) create waaaaay too many clothes every year, let alone each season! we have already created enough clothing to clothe the world over. think about how much is tossed out every day, for reasons of "it doesn't fit me anymore," or the "current style." we are only kidding ourselves as a species. if i were in charge, hemp and flax would be everywhere, and all pants would be made in ONE long hem length, so we would have to get them hemmed (that would also create more jobs for those who can sew). well i'd better stop before my rant goes on for an hour...
our resources are valuable, precious, and finite. everything can be recycled or reused in some fashion.
focusing on what is good for the long life of the earth is what is more important. the overconsumption birthed out of domestication of animals is only the start of what became the mess of what we are in today...
sorry if my rant got off topic.

peace

Uncontrolled mass consumption is of course a problem. People simply eat, drink and drive far more than they need to. They buy LOADS of crap that they don't NEED.

This is why I find the Christmas season so disturbing. I've read the bible and can't find anywhere in it Jesus or his apostles saying:

"Celebrate the birth of the prince of peace with the mass slaughter of innocent animals, senseless production and distribution of all manner of useless plastic toys and decorations, and the production of billions of tons of rubbish. Oh, and don't forget to eat and drink so much that you are sick and fall asleep!"

Or did I miss something?
