Someone asked me this the other night and I suggested 1959, with the release of easy snappin. What do you guys think of this?

It was invented around this time, but it's not very easy to say what was rocksteady or reggae, because they sound very familiar.

Reggae was not "invented". The Jamaican music known as the Rocksteady style simply evolved/progressed into Reggae.

This question is difficult ..you have to explain the musical history of Ja . With the independance in 1962 and the rise of Ska . Progression of Rocksteady into Reggae ..

Don't overlook the pre-Ska times with Mento, Shuffle etc...
Over the years Jamaican music has had so many different genres/styles & they have all been a great musical pleasure to hear in their own special way!

Easy Snappin with Theophilus Beckford is regarded as one of the tracks that took Jamaican RnB to Ska. Not Reggae. Beatiful track though.

Many people claim that People Funny Boy with Lee Scratch was the first reggae track.

Then again they say " Oh Carolina " by the Folks bros was the first reggae song.
