i wouldn't be surprised that "STUFF" will turn up on E-bay.

they should publish a list of missing records... maybe ebay is too famous. it would be easy to put it on the collectors market without using ebay.

from my point of view this is a clear example of perverse effects coming from collectors... and it's a huge loss for jamaican history and cultural heritage... like all the african artworks that ended in some european or american museum

If records have gone missing then the simple fact is the JBC haven't done their job properly and secured these records. An inside job is surely the most likely scenario here. Or were the doors to the archive just left open so anyone can come and go.

Thieves strip Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation archives

The police have been called in to investigate the disappearance of thousands of vinyl records and compact discs from the archives of the defunct Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC).

Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports Olivia Grange said the discovery was made by senior staff of the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica (PBCJ) during a tour of the facility on Wednesday.

The music library, which was under the watch of the National Archives, appears to have been stripped of 80 per cent of its content. It is suspected that the items were removed over the period 2004 to 2007.

Between November 2005 and November 2007 the premises fell under the control of Belgian firm Besix, which was contracted to work on the nearby transport centre.

Minister Grange said she was confident the police would be pulling out all the stops in an effort to find those involved in the disappearance of the most comprehensive music collection in Jamaica.

Cultural heritage damaged

"Those who have committed this act have done violence to our deep cultural heritage," she said. "This archive was expected to be a core asset of the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica, which will be taking to the airwaves in the near future with a great variety of informational, educational and culturally entertaining programmes."

She added: "I am not sure whether enough was done to secure this national treasure, but we will know more as the police investigations continue."

Minister Grange said she was appealing to the public, locally and overseas, to be on the lookout for persons who might be in possession of the records and CDs and to contact the police if they have information.

great shame, hopefully we'll hear something more about this soon, i imagine PBCJ must me pretty annoyed about this one, wonder how they will get replacements of these tunes if at all they will.

Well the collectors and sellers robbed the country of most of their roots LP's at the end of 70' and beginning 80''. It is sad to see that the few last original copies left the country to end up in a vault. But cant blaim the Jamaicans it is appealing. Iám also to blaim because Iám wiling to pay too much at ebay.

These archives must have been open to whoever if they don't even know the exact day of the robbery, Is this how you protect your "Cultural Heritage" ?

At least some of those naughty collectors you all love to hate have got some pretty comprehensive cultural libraries saved for the future.

And most of them look after their records better than this lot did!
