Greeting I-Drens and Sistrens,
Has anyone heard the album by the one Rico titled Man From Wareika? I'm wondering if it is worth getting. How much should you pay for the island LP pressing? Thanks.

There are a couple different releases I have seen. The first I heard were Blue Note, for whom I'd guess the original contract plate was pressed. I've got mine on Classic Vinyl, an obvious rerelease.
The album is Rico's best without peer. Unbelievable transcendasnt roots instrumental.
A MUST IF AVAILABLE.
A Reasonable cost is any under $20.

This LP pops up loads on ebay, usually the Island pressing.You can also get it on CD.

I saw Rico play in London recently, we chatted about the time he played at WOMAD in, I think 1980, a gig in Somerset, England. He described that as one of his best, and said his band then was perfect. True, the set he played was amazing.

He's in his 70s now and yet, once agin, the set he played in London last year was inspirational.

Get the LP, and if you have REALLY deep pockets, get the Dub version. Oh I wish I could afford a copy of that!

Its a classic. It is now available again on Island from Amazon of all places. A Japanese re-issue similar format to Jezebel by Justin Hinds.

I got the Island reissue on vynil. Most of the content is available on the compilation Roots to the bone, Island, on cd, easy to find. But the cover is so beautiful and the album so mythical that, definitly, you should get it ! Peace

This is one of the best instrumental reggae releases ever i.m.o
I just picked up the CD reissue..
I was fortunate enough to be sound engineer for a Rico show in Norwich early '90's..
Live, he is as good as his recordings..
See him play if you can, as said earlier the man's in his 70's and is still a major name in the music scene..
Gonna get that dub version..It's a must have..

Any producer info, anyone?

Whose rhyhthm's are featured and in what style? When it comes to instrumentals, I for one, am extremely fond of the magical combination of Yabby You and the man Tommy McCook. Tracks like "Revenge" or "Plague Of Horn" are IMHO finest moments in the history of instrumental reggae. Then again, I have focused mainly on 70's harmony roots and dub, so I sadly haven't heard that much of instrumental reggae.

What I'd like to know is, to whose works could Man From Wareika be compared? I have heard from zillions of sources that this album is great, but that is a rather vague description.

So, anyone?

All tracks on 'MFW' are originals ! All written by Rico himself. There's no versioning of standards. This and the overall sound and mood make this record so unique. A real classic. Compare it to Augustus Pablo's best instrumental work if you want to.
There is also a japanese CD release from 2004 of the dub album and it's affordable too.
