weird vinyl fixations

I gather that many people here are obsessed with collecting slices of black plastic with a hole in the middle, they call it vinyl i gather. Anyone else feel a little , shall we say, fazed by the craze if you like? I have no vinyl, i love reggae but even my cds are transitory in this life, i do not accumulate just for the sake of it. Does anyone do that here?
And my sourness in this post was initially due to being refused..by 8 posters here...they refused my cds when i wanted cash..but when they thought vinyl they were keen..strange..no need for me to throw a wobbler though..

A kind of closed clique exists here, a competition exists to see who can accrue the most records. Obscene capitalist greed motivates this. Some will talk of how the poor need help, when all they themselves do is buy vinyl. Absurd.
I agree vinylitis is a dangerous thing. I love vinyl and I think it has a magic and warm sound quality above CD's- also they tend to make a more attractive package - but that doesn't mean I knock CD's!
Leggo has vinilytis and spends too much on vinyl, but where do you get the idea that it is connected with obscene capitalist greed? He buys his vinyl and then drives 200 miles to Portsmouth and back to play his records to educate the masses, for less money than it costs him in petrol to get down! How is that motivated by capitalist greed? It is motivated by a love of the music, a touch of obsession and a desire to spread the gospel of reggae music!

One more thing, I buy both vinyl and CD's (so does leggo even though he too prefers vinyl) - we just only use vinyl when we DJ - call me a traditionalist, but it just doesn't seem as good when the DJ's use CD's.

Seems to be a bit of an anti vinyl - pro cd backlash in some of these forums - not surprising as some of us old gits do harp on about vinyl too much, I guess.

However, let's not forget that apart from the REggae market, what has really kept vinyl alive is the Dance Music scene. It is true that the Dance DJ's are beginning to use technology such a Traktor on their laptops, but every night thousands and thousands of DJ's around the world are using 'slices of black plastic with a hole in the middle' - why, because it is better than a CD for what they do!

I'm at a loss to understand how vinyl has made me a nasty capitalist.

Can someone explain that?

If I can't play vinyl when I am playing out as a DJ, then I'm not interested. For me, it would be like entering a motorcycle race in a car!

I would have bought vinyl records off you Sean. Because I think they are worth spending money on. I can't feel the same way about CDs. And besides, I had nearly everything you listed on CD already on vinyl.

I took no offence by the way. Even by the original and rather bad tempered version of your post! :D

Sean is dead right though, everything you have here in this world is transitory, so don't get too attached to anything here as you're gonna lose it all on the day you die.

Have you ever tried skinning up on a CD case?
