i know the standard run of the mill techniques for cleaning my LP's but i have a really badly stained record. can i just put record cleaning solution on the vinyl itself and brush it out? it looks to be a coffee stain and fingerprint that had grease or food on it.

Is there someone you know who has a vacuum record cleaning machine. There are also record stores that charge you. New these machines run over $400

Id agree with Leggo on this one, you need to use vacuum wet cleaning to get this one sorted i'd say.
There are some record stores that have these and you can get it cleaned by them

90° alcohol and demakup cotton split in two, make the record turn on the deck while you press the wet cotton. Cheapest way, makes also G records sound EX. The cotton doesn't use the grooves at all.

Do NOT use any kind of alcohol on your records! I use the Disco Anti-Stat record cleaner from Knosti for cleaning my records. It works very well and doesn't harm the records at all. Do a Google search or maybe a local record store sells one. It's expensive, but worth it if you are a serious vinyl collector.

I think alcohol is OK when used as part of a cleaning solution (ie: with distilled water or other mild cleansers), but on its own it will make your records dry and brittle if you use it too often.

I hadn't heard of the Disco Anti-Stat, but it has mixed reviews here:

Are the problems mentioned there (long drying times, damaged labels, etc.) genuine, Mick?

lol
alcohol, even at 90° doesn't harm the record **at all**, this is chemistry, alcohol and PVC don't react together. I've been using cotton for a long time now on all my records, even valuable records and don't worry Leggo, I've never damage one of them. The thing is you must wet the record with alcohol on the cotton smoothly at the beginnning and then when dust is floating, you can push a bit harder to clean the grooves (sorry I'm not really at ease with english when it comes to precision

).
Don't be afraid because it's cheap ! maybe a MOTH RCM can do a bit better but a MOTH RCM is way more expensive so if you can't or don't want to afford it, unmodified alcohol at the pharmacy is the best solution.
