A couple of days ago I discussed playing out with vinyl with MightyZ.

He is considering going down the MP3 route, mainly because one of his prized vintage vinyls came back with a deep scratch from his last DJ session.

He has a point, as I too have damaged precious records when playing out, and I have also damaged myself carrying the crates of vinyl into a session!

So is this the beginning of the end for Djs with wax?

MP3s are shite ! Unless they are 320 or higher. Play WAV if you play digital, especially on a big system...

I play vinyl when I play out. Mostly dj in and around NY in venues that already have a setup. I play mostly 45s so its never a big thing. got a few boxes and they are pretty love when compared to lp's and 12"s . thought i can say that most of the new riddims (95-2005) i play on cd just cause i can not keep up with the amount of digital tunes coming out.

I only play out with 12 inch 45s as I just can't get into 7 inch. The truth is I am afraid to start buying 7s as there are so many of the bloody things they'd bankrupt me in weeks!

Actually, the amount of vinyl I have now probably needs a big truck, not a handcart!

I agree with skunride, the bigger the system, the worse MP3 sounds.

But I am not about to give up playing out with vinyl, I don't want to be a CDJ or a PCJ. I am a vinyl dinosaur and will probably play wax until the day I die.

However, loads of DJs are turning their back on vinyl so we hard core wax DJs are already in the minority.

that is good for the vinylist. that means less people after the same record. maybe i can find those prince far i records.

I don't think it really means the records will be in less demand as generally they are being mopped up by collectors and enthusiasts rather than by DJs.

I have been playing vinyl out for quite a few years and its extremely rare for any of them to come back and 'skip'.

To be fair, im a pretty messy dj when im at the decks, i tend to leave a few tunes hanging about ready in case i change my mind (I know, its **bad**) but i dont think the chances of damaging a record have gone up, perhaps it was just badluck.

Also, if you own the record and it gets damaged, whats the legality of you going to a vinyl creator, the guys that burn your tune for £20-30 and just getting it re-made? -Surely if you own the original and your not creating any more then one unit and its for yourself, this is legal?.

I know its legal to burn and create a 'backup' of a movie on dvd, im interested; is this the same with vinyl?

they said cd will replace vinyl, now cd gone down and vinyl still selling. i can imagine for a regular reggae fan is better get tune as mp3 to use it on a ipod but for a dj this sht aint working out as someone said anysthing below 320 kbs is rubbish and it sound very distorted even on a regular hi fi, been thru dat already and must say its true. to me i need 45s and cds for the quality of tracks, I#ve seen juno.co.uk have a nice mp3 output but i still want the whol ting with sleeve/case/booklet/wateva, im not paying any money for stuff which i cant hold in a hand, about 1000 tune get lost last time from my harddrive because of some stupid error, i cant stand dat shit, my original cds and vinyls still criss ina dem box but lost mp3s trouble me more than spending some money to the label. so i still prefer the real ting.
