advise needed

Post by Greg »

whats up people of RA, i have a issue with a vinyl i purchased the other day, i take verygood care of my records and am usually able to get a bad sounding record to sound decent enough to listen to without cringing. but this particular record i cannot get the snaps crackles and pops to die down enough to be able to listen to it. i have a good record cleaning brush and record cleaning fluid but it is still not enough. normally i would have given up but this is an original copy of pablo moses a song which in my opinion is too good to disregard. any advise on what i might be able to do about the crackle issue?

Do the grooves look shallow but the record has a nice sheen? Maybe the surface was skimmed before the sale?

Think we all have a few of those in our collections. I have yet to hear of a remedy. Look out for another copy is probably the answer mate.

It depends where you got it and if you can get a refund.
Its sounds like you got it at a shop, so if they dont want to lose customers then they should swap or refund the money but once youve started trying to make it sound better they can say you made all the noise and crackles. There have been many fights down record shops on the subject. If you paid big money then your going to have to reason with them.
I would have to listen to tunes before i buy them uness its someone i knew well.

It can be a number of things.

Yes, skimmed is one of them.

Or it could be REALLY dirty deep down, this can only be cured with a pro record cleaning machine of the wet-vacuum kind. I've had several records go from VG- to VG+ or even better once cleaned. The clue being they look good but sound bad, so they're not damaged but just deep down in the groove dirty.

Or, the record looks OK but plays bad, no matter how you clean it. This could be a poor pressing, in which case, there's no hope.

Or it could have been played with a really bad stylus, worn, broken or just very cheap. This does its damage deep in the grooves and the record looks ok but again, plays crap. Again, no hope for that record.

What is the record? Maybe one of us has it and can confirm the pressing quality or lack of it!

I edited it early in the thread and i will say it now.
i would take the record back rather than fiddling about with trying to make it sound better and say what have you sold me and would demand a refund or a swap for another tune and call the police you bogus seller, cos im not moving from your shop until i get what i want.
The first mistake you made dont buy tune without hearing them first record sellers know every trick in the book.
