Discovering a Classic - Tribute to the Martyrs

I was going to title this thread "Rediscovering a Classic" but I never enjoyed it on my first couple listens 15+ years ago. I remember liking the song Jah Pickney (Rock Against Racism) but that was it and the cassette sat unlistened to for well over a decade. I pulled it out a week ago, blew the dust off, and now I think it's brilliant. Musically it is quite complex which might be why I didn't understand it at first. Quite militant lyrically as well. I must have listened to it at least 16 times in the past week. What a killer!

Talking about Steel Pulse right?

If so, you're right, it's a great album!
I especially like "Babylon Makes The Rules"

One of the first reggae albums that got me hooked. Not a weak song on the disc. Pulse's first two LPs are in my top 10 British Reggae albums (Misty in Roots, Aswad, Black Slate, the Regulars, and Pablo Gad are all equally powerful).

Everything they did from Handsworth Revolution to Earth Crisis is inspired and well worth picking up. Even though they occasionally still pull out a great tune ("Taxi Driver"), I wish Steel Pulse would go back to their true roots sound. They have tunes and even albums that attempt to gain that same vibe but they have yet to get the new players in their band to live up to the sound of this great album.

I like the title track and "Uncle George" most, but there really are no bad tracks on this album.

Peace,

James

I agree 100%!!! I was always surprised that some critics treat it as a medicore album. It's superb!!!

My favourite tracks are Babylon Makes The Rules and Blasphemy...
