Greetings Brethrens,

I recently discovered the track by Defenders titled 'Our Rights' b/w 'Our Version'. The track and dub appear on the Pressure Sounds comp of Micron singles titled 'Every Mouth Must be Fed'. I find this to be an excellent track. It has a hard roots riddim and solid vocals throughout. The chorus is especially haunting with the heavy reverb-dosed lyrics. The production of this track is credited to Pete Weston on the comp. I was curious if the band, Defenders, had recorded any other little known tracks. I'd really like to hear them. Also, I wondered if anyone knows any Micron tracks not included on this comp that are killer. Many Thanks!

I'm not quite sure but I think it's the same singer as on [Solid Gold](http://www.roots-archives.com/release/3 ... ight=48386), here just called 'Morgan & The Soul Defenders).

Definitely sounds like the Soul Defenders and is very similar musically to several tracks on Soul Defenders at Studio One. I assumed that the singer might be Freddy McKay?

it's incredible I've always thought this song was recorded at brentford road... and that those defenders were the soul defenders...

BUT I remembered there's this song "set them free" by the defenders/lee perry & the defenders... which is not studio one related (?).

if the defenders aren't the soul defenders, who are they? it's also difficult to imagine that the soul defenders (studio one musicians) recorded some tracks with other producers and in other studios...

any help welcome...

I'm not sure if you figured it out yet, but the song "Our Rights" (On the Micron album) is a Studio One recording.
There's no mention of this anywhere in the linernotes or Studio credits.

I always thought it was a Studio One recording too. But do you know for sure that it is?

I'm 99 % sure it is the Soul Defenders and Roots Knotty Roots also says.It's definitely not Freddie McKay singing lead but after listening to the "Soul Defenders at Studio One cd I"m sure it is Vin Morgan.

Thanks all for the info. It is interesting that it is a Studio One recording, as there is no mention on the liner notes. Yes, I was under the impression this group was different from the Soul Defenders. Unfortunately, I have not listened to much of the Soul Defenders either. "Set Them Free", with Lee Perry, is an excellent track, in which the Defenders sang back-up vocals. This was the only other track (that I know of) credited to Defenders. It's weird but sometimes when I listen to that track ("Set Them Free") it sounds like Bob Marley is one of the back-up vocalists.. I'm sure it's not so, but someone's voice reminds me of his on that track.

I think 'The Defenders' in "Set Tem Free" is a made up name, as he is singing about 'Lord Defend' being in a court session.
The backing vocals sounds a lot like Lee Perry himself singing though.

Yes, I agree that this is quite possible. He does declare himself 'Lord Defend' in the mentioned track, and seems to have an obsession with renaming every person and every band. I wouldn't doubt that it is mostly Lee Perry himself on the background vocals; especially due to the vocal characteristics Bob Marley picked up from Lee Perry.
