Lilly of the Valley

Post by Pluie »

Hey roots archivers,

I found many references to the Negus as "The Lilly of the Valley" in roots songs, and i was wondering if some of you have a clue about the link between the nice flower that blooms at the end of spring and Haile Selassie...

Any help welcome !

Pluie-

It's a Biblical reference. Used by King Solomon (Song of SOlomon 2:1) in his writings.

Became a very popular hymn by C.W. Fry:

He's the Lily of the Valley,
The bright and Morning Star.
He's the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

Yep, I guessed it was a biblical reference, but why the lilly of the valley ? Is this more than a simple metaphor ? Does it carry a specific meaning ?

It is quoted to emphasize the descent of the Negus from the House of Solomon.
