Hi there new to here. just wondering if there are many roots reggae enthusiasts who listen to much hip hop? i love both genres but not necessarily when they are infused. given that hip hop was born out of reggae i was just seeing if any of the strict roots enthusiasts had any time for hip hop. for artists who do cross over well i would recommend both deadly huntah and million dan both formerly of the demon boyz for great reggae and ragga influenced hip hop. other than this i find reggae influenced hip hop rather limited and homogenous. also while i love conscious reggae i find that i much prefer the more morally grey hip hop, contradiction i know! peace and blessings

Check BDP, Daddy Freddy, Jamalski, FooSchnickens, Shinehead, Roots Manuva...even some Duck Down's early material.. there's a lot, just hard to think of it all right now. Maybe other's can add some more.

BDP are great, KRSONE is a teacher, i very much enjoyed chip fu from fooschnickens over the collie buddz come around riddim. also have seen roots manuva live he is a great artist with lots of reggae influence. dub come save me was a reasonably good dub cover album. will check the other artists but i am interested that you have choisen hip hop very much in tow with the mood and philosophy of reggae

Back in the early 80s when hip hop started to come along, I listened and bought quite a bit. Some of the New York stuff that came out was very good. There was one album that I got hold of that was very recorded live with DJs and rappers etc, and it was very similar to a reggae sound system, only it was with scratching and rapping.

Its well documented that rapping was introduced by Kool Herc into the New York Funk scene as a result of his involvement in reggae sound systems when he lived in Jamaica. The particular album that I mentioned was possibly the next stage in the evolution of hip hop.

However, after a few years I lost interest.

It's sure that hiphop and reggae have loads in common. In fact i'm a hophop listener (as a lot of "kids of the nineties")and i listen to a lot of reggae.
for me the link is bass/drums guided me through reggae, directly inside the roots of the seventies. it's hard to find bass/drums sound as chill as the ones you find in early nineties rap and roots.
And the have a lot of things in common, the first one is that they are strongly influenced by soul music.
Also Krs-One "the teacher" raps "listen only to reggae and do only rap, so i rock the mic"... U can listen to "silent Assassin" of Sly & Robbie, a rap album by the guys produced by Krs-One in 1989 featuring Krs-One, Queen Latifah, Shinehead and others. Very nice album.

and they also are some "hybrid" crews like the dub pistols (www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFP-Ujws2oI) doing stuff with terry hall(the specials), or roots manuva (www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRxYNTH-5Go) who is really a great artist. Generally the english scene is influenced by reggae.

Also for me it's the same, i prefer counsious reggae and with rap, i prefer "dark" stuff but i dont find it really contadictive, reggae is dark when it's conscious ("run come rally" is not the happyest track that i know...) and to everybody his way of being, his own identity.
