I'd highly recommend emusic. Not sure what size their mp3's are, but I find them to be good enough for me. In the last few months, lots of JA producers have started putting up their back catalogues for download (Bunny Lee, Linval Thompson, Yabby You also Channel One to name a few. Pressure Sounds and Blood and Fire are also on there.I pay £15 a month for 75 tracks and I've found loads of rare albums that I would've had no chance of hearing, let alone buying if it wasn't for emusic.

I recommend vinyl. Thats the way you most likely don't get bogus stuff in your hands.

Last I heard emusic's bit rate was only 192kbps which is pretty low.
Definitely a good question as there are lots of unauthorized places to download.
I too would be willing to pay for decent bit rate or CD quality downloads of the 60s 70s reggae dub etc. though I am unaware of one good legal location to do so.

320kbps and FLAC MP3s can be bought at boomkat.com - just search for whatever you're looking for there.

I must be getting dyslexic - I read it as 'Bookmat' and thought - that sounds really familiar! But what's the 'book' part about - or indeed the 'mat'!
Yes, I had checked out Boomkat before - looks like they revamped their site and have some good stuff...for when I have some $$$
