I was having a chat with a mate last night about a whole load of things, somehow we got on subject of reggae and the biblical type horn sound that is popular on many reegae tracks.

The thought occured to me, were trumpets etc actually played in that style back then, or has reggae been influenced by 30s Hollywood films about Egypt and the Pharaohs etc. In other words should Cecil B DeMille be included in RA!

I stole my copy of the bible from a hotel, unfortunately it didn't come with speakers.

sorry, i know what you mean by that sound, but its a bit funny to call it biblical since we have no idea whatsoever what music sounded like in those days. And it is indeed an interesting question: why do we call it "biblical", or why do i know what you mean? Maybe it's because of those films, yes, or maybe there's an inherent "religious" sound to it, something intimidating and serious, dignified.

I Didnt really explain my self very well.

Many reggae tunes of that old ancient horns style an example off the top of my head is Jah Fire by Hugh Mundell.

Many Hollywood Movies from the 30s and 40s ie Samson and Delilah, or Land of the Pharaohs used similar style of playing, my question was, did that style of playing really exist, or is it a hollywood creation.
