sound systems playing cds

Post by ital kemar »

every sound system i've ever seen plays strictly vinyl, and thats the way a sound system should be in my opinion. so out of interest, would a sound system that plays only cds, no vinyl, attract your interest? would you pay to see this sort of sound system?

it depends , if i know that the selecta has the tune on plastic (original cd,records or Dubplate)...i don't mind.I know that bring lot of expensive and heavy records around is not so easy , expecialy if you have to take a plane.I always try to bring my records with me...never did a cd session , i almost don't know how to use a cd player.
It happened that i played some impossible to find tunes from Mp3 but i don't realy like do that (happened 4 or 5 times)...so i will not do that again.

Anyway i don't like people that play music 100% downloaded from DC++...but i think serious sondsystem don't do that (i hope).

It's all about the vibes.
Some people come with a big record collection and don't build the vibes. Some people come with a big wall of speakers and don't bring the vibes.

Good selectors and operators have a talent. A talent to serve the music in a proper way ... to make a tune sound more special. Nah matter the format of the tune. Nah matter the power of the sound.

Ofcourse I do enjoy and prefer the sound of a needle that's landing on the surface of the vinyl, seeking for the groove.

Less and less sounds play vinyl, with more switching to CD. I just came back from JA a few days ago, and saw this happenning almost everywhere.

Personally I prefer the sound and asthetics of vinyl, but if the music is good, the music is good, period.

Why would anyone cut dubs that can only be played a few times before deteriorating not prefer the music on CD, where it will last longer?

Just from observations, it seems as though those who were brought up in the CD age are the most militant about vinyl. If you lived through the early days, the advent of CDs was fantastic - never before was so much good, old, music readily available. Give me a CD direct from the master tape over a poorly pressed record any day of the week!

IMO, getting all hung up on format is kind of like focusing on how the food is arranged on your plate rather than focusing on how it tastes.

Certainly with you on that. As you know though, in the reggae world, sadly that often isn't an option.
Oh and by the way I was born in the 50's! :)

good points there, but i think just as mic dj-ing is an art, the selector/operators skills behind the deck/decks are just as important and almost an artform, and i love watching them perform while taking in the sounds. i think the cd does away with this part of the show. not to mention hearing a record that your probably searching for for a long time, played on vinyl, and the version, rocking the hall. the same tune played off a downloaded cd dosent have the same magic (for the want of a better word)imo.

I watched an interesting feature recently on 'The Gadget Show' here in the UK where they blindfolded the presenters and played the same track on vinyl, CD and mp3 (320kbps) to determine the best sound quality.

Despite both judges admitting they REALLY wanted vinyl to romp home, amazingly mp3 won by a couple of lengths followed by CD with vinyl trailing in third! They said it sounded really dull by comparison.

Admittedly, there are a number of other variables around the hi-fi setup to take into account, and the track in question was 'Money' by Pink Floyd, but it did get me thinking about how a compressed format could actually sound better than analogue.

I wonder how much of playing vinyl is just about looks....

To me, its more about an approach of the music. Discovering it through mp3 or on wax matters, for me.

Wax is certainly more expensive and not always of better sound. But collections grow very slowly, you need to take your time step by step digging, selecting your needed ones cause you aint gotta get a full collection at once. And live, you know that youre not hearing the same rip that you have when you see a real record.

When I like a tune in sound, I enjoy to go to the decks and have a look at the label and tune name.

There is a mystic world behind that of course too, but finally reggae has created an own mythology and so records, for me, are part of it all, old reggae and vinyl cant be seperate. It can sound superficial, I know, but I like this continuity with the years it was created. But I love it like dis and I would really prefer to hear a selecta with real plates. The main thing remains the music and message, of course, if the access to records is impossible.

Vinyl vs. CD, here we go again... I guess there is one thing we can all agree on - you can't select with cassette tapes (although there is a lot to be said for the sound of the rewind...)
