The first time I heard the term was in 1980 when LKJ released the LP of the same name. I always took it as a play on words ("base culture", or "inferior class") since it came from a poet. Wordsmith-tongue-in-cheek kind of stuff.

Only LKJ knows for sure though. Since then, it's been used many times, but I am not sure that there is some sort sort of "meaning" for it per se. It's simply part of the "reggae lexicon" now.

I didn't know the term bass culture was "invented" by LKJ. I always understood it as a good metaphor for what reggae is: socially it's a culture and musicaly it's build around the bass.
Interesting thoughts there, Dave, never saw it like that before..

It has EVERYTHING to do with the Bass (instrument).
But as Dave K said it was coined by LKJ as a play on words.

BTW ,,,Excellent book too.

And he clearly state in the beginning of the book that the title refers to the LKJ album.
