reggae record warp paronoias during the summer

i don't if my paronoias are setting in because of this hot summer (around 81 to 84 degrees)and worrying about my records warping. i wish i had a basement or was living in a cold enviornment, but i don't. so i seriously worry about my records which are in flight cases. i just pulled them out today, it's been months since i have played any of them, but i started noticing, the records were a bit bowed in the center. example: if you sit the record on your turntable, the center, where the label is, does not sit on the plate. it bows 1/8 of an inch or more above the platter. is this something to worry about? it seemed as if all the records toward the front seem to be that way. don't know if its related to the heat or if i got too many records in the case. has anyone else encounter these problems?

if all you have to worry about is 81 to 84 degrees then you got nothing to worry about. i would be more worried about these things you call "flight cases" (suitcases?) you got them stored in

the flight cases are basically record cases made of metal on the outside and inside is a foam rubber material. these cases actually saved my records a couple occassions, when my bathroom shower started spewing sewage water and flooded my entire room. if it wasn't for the cases, and the pvc plastic sleeves, my entire collection would've been destroyed. you don't think should have them in there?
here's some links to the what cases i got.

i thought maybe you meant samsonite type suitcases with concave curved insides. that might warp a record. those record boxes you use probably wouldnt even if they were very loose in there. if they were jammed tight inside the boxes it might warp them as it might distort the covers and bend the records.
sounds to me like what you got is what you need and maybe those records were a bit warpy to begin with. regardless i dont think they are harmed if the center sits up (or down) one eighth inch. like leggo says get a record clamp or make one from some brass stock...or just ignore it, i doubt it makes much if any difference.
heat warp is usually indicated by the record looking like a series of waves from the side view, causing the stylus to jump as it traverses hills and valleys. dont sound like what you got going on there.

funkyfred,
bless and thanks for the old thread with the dewarping machine. the funny thing is, i was the one who started that thread awhile back. i stubled on that and i was so happy that there was an actual machine that does that, but for the price was a bit pricey. but i think there were a couple record stores that were making money by having that as a service for record owners, that wanted to dewarp there records.
bless,

i dont think 1/8" consistent concave/convex shape on the outside half inch of a record makes any difference whatsoever, or more accurately, enough difference to be heard by a human ear (as opposed to laboratory equipment). and thats what i was talking about when i mentioned that: consistent minor warping.
there can be little argument that actual heat warping will totally screw up playback, both because of the sailing effect when cresting high points and the bottoming effect when falling into the valleys formed by low points in between high points. that is rough on the stylus, the cartridge and the (already damaged beyond repair, some miracle machine notwithstanding) record itself.
you can make yourself a very servicable record "clamp" simply by taking a brass billet, machining it down so its outside circumfrence is slightly smaller than a record label and then drilling a hole in the center to fit over the spindle. there is no actual "clamp" required, the weight of the brass will have the desired effect of making the record lie flat though it doesnt do so much if the side where the center is lower than the outer edge is being played. this will pretty much not help at all if the record is truly heat warped and the outer edge is a roller coaster ride.

yeah you have a point about the weight of the "clamp", but i assume everyone has technics 1200s at their disposal!

i have a question in regards to my mitchell clamp that i use for some warped records. to describe how its used, well first off its around plastic the size and diameter of a record label and has a locking mechanism that you lock onto your spindle of the turntable.you add these felt shimmies on the spindle first, then the record (so now the record is elevated a bit coz of the shimmies). then you lock the clamp onto the spindle, which flattens out the warps on the edges of records. then the warped record is playable. now i have a technics 1200 what i use the clamp with, the only thing was that the rubber mat was way too thick, that the clamp had barely any spindle to grab once the shimmies were placed on it. so what i did to remedy this was to replace the original thick mat that came with my 1200s, with a thinner rubber mat from my old belt-driven technics turntable. is this advisable and ok, from everything that i have explained?
