Keith Hudson questions - and answers!

I´ve been a fan of Keith Hudson and his productions for quite some time now. I have all his CDs and most of the LPs (except the earliest - they´re Too Expensive...)

Some questions still not answered to my satisfaction:

1. What were the release dates for Flesh Of My Skin and Pick A Dub? There seems to be conflicting statements of 1974 and 1975 for both LPs.
Does anyone have any memories of when they were released, or maybe some paper reviews/relase sheets/chart entry dates etc.?
If possible, I´d like to know month or part of the year...

2. In what ways are the original mix of Flesh Of My Skin different to the rereleases (which have the 1988 re-mix)?
There are some alternate stereo mixes of the side 1 tracks from Flesh Of My Skin on the CD Greatest Hits Part 1 - are these maybe the same as on the original LP press?

3. Are the mixes on the Mamba vs. the Atra releases of Torch Of Freedom the same? Somewhere I read that they aren´t - I only have the Atra press, which is the same mix as the CD on Conqueror.

4. Many tracks on the CD Greatest Hits Part 1 are in shorter, alternate mixes compared to other albums.
Write Me Your Resumé/Version is not on any other album, though - are these also shorter than the original single (12")? Maybe it was also on 7"? (on the CD they are 2.35/2.50)

Hope some of you experts/fans out there can help!

Trying to get some answers for you blackarkrock.

1. To my knowledge and personal memories I am pretty sure that 'Flesh of my Skin' came in 1974 and 'Pick a Dub' in the first half of 1975.

2. Never heard the remix, if there ever was any that is.

3. The Atra and the Mamba releases of 'Torch of Freedom' have the same mix, no difference.

4. Don't know that CD, sorry.

Thanks a lot Bellyman!

My 4th question was really how long the original single versions of Write Me Your Resumé / Version are...

About the remix of Flesh Of My Skin:
The Atra reissue states "remixed by Sid Bucknor at B.B.M.C., 1988".
This same remix is also on Basic Replay´s later issue.
It would be very interesting to hear from someone who has heard both the original and the remix!

Leggo Rocker:

That IS interesting!:)
Now, even greater would be to hear you describe the difference...

Oh, and thanks for your nice site!
I love the series on/from Black Music Magazine.
The first mention of Flesh Of My Skin in it was February 1975, so I assume it must have been released late 1974...
Looking forward to the rest of this!

Olé Olé, Nah Skin Up seems to be the Dub companion to "from an extreme to another" released the same year, no?...

Nah Skin Up is a vocal tune on a Greensleeves 12" (and one you ought to hear too)

I finally have the original Mamba LP "Flesh of My Skin..." in my collection!:)

So, I´ll try to answer question #2:
(Original mix: Mamba / remix: Atra & Basic Replay)

Yes, there are som differencies in the mixes - mostly not very dramatic, like instruments having alternate stereo positioning and being slightly more prominent.
On some tracks I think his voice is more upfront on the remix and there´s some more synth to be heard as well. A few tracks are also a bit longer.

However, the most apparent (and strange...) difference is that on the original LP the track My Nocturne is a version of the preceding Treasures of the World, but on the remix this is replaced by a version of Talk Some Sense! Still called My Nocturne, though...
This "new" version is heavier and better than the original track - but, why?...

And, yes, the mixes of tracks from "Flesh.." on the "Greatest Hits" CD are the original ones, although a couple are shorter/faded earlier.

Still, I´d like to know the length of the original Write Me Your Resume´/Version...

re: Mamba/Atra versions of "flesh of my skin":

The mixes of "Blood of My Blood", "No Friend of Mine", and "Treasures of the World" are slightly longer on the Atra pressing (20 to 35 seconds each).

Also the track order is different on the two pressings of "Torch of Freedom" LP. The Mamba press leads with "Torch of Freedom"; in this sense I strongly prefer the Atra pressing, which leads with "Lost All Sense of Direction". Leading with that track makes it a MUCH smoother progression from "Flesh of My Skin" IMO.
