This compilation features many of my favorite Studio One songs so I would like to get a hold of it on vinyl. Apparently it was originally released in 1981 and then later repressed in 2004. Can anyone who owns the repress comment on the sound quality? And if you own the original, how does that one sound?
Thanks

The original sounds fantastic. The copy I have has the S1 "ribbon" label. Haven't heard the repress to compare.

Also look out for a Canadian released pirate copy entitled "Best of Studio One Volume 4" - good pressing. This "forced" Coxsone to release "Pirates Choice".

Ditto what Dave said. There used tonnes of these up at S&W back in the day.davek wrote:The original sounds fantastic. The copy I have has the S1 "ribbon" label. Haven't heard the repress to compare.

Btw, there is a difference in sounds between the 'Pirates Choice' and the er, original 'Best of Studio One Vol.4' release.
Back on topic, the original 'Pirates Choice' is one of the cleanest pressings ever to have come from Coxsone's pressing plant.

Downbeat Special says "The Studio One version has a slightly different mix, without overdubs and in mono". The Connect Records "original" release is a good pressing (my copy anyway), presumably taken from vinyl but from good source copies (eg without the pressing defect on some 7" copies of "True Experience").

I have the 2004 LP repress of this one.
Quality is OK, pressing volume is rather low.

MY True Experience (FCD-7834-A with Bunny and Skitter Lumumbo on the flip) is as clean and crisp as they come.Return of Jesco wrote:Downbeat Special says "The Studio One version has a slightly different mix, without overdubs and in mono". Listening to this now, i always assumed it was just female back-up singers, but these are young children singing!

There is zero bass on the Horace Andy Show and Tell tune on my repress of that LP. Had to hunt the 45 down but well worth it for the version, better than the vocal cut!!
