Leroy Brown - Gone gone.

easy.

I have a couple of questions about this tune.

http://www.killalltraitors.co.uk/Gone_gone.mp3

What genre of reggae is it? is it straight Reggae? Rockers? Lovers Rock? I don't really know, I usually stick with Dub but this tune is so heavy.

Could I play it at a Dub night? Does anyone know any similarly heavy down tempo tracks? The only other track I know that's similar is the Dennis Hammilton mix of Rainbow Country, I want to find more of this kind of sound but I'm a little lost.

Thanks.

Well ... dub is and isn't a sub-genre of its own. »Gone Gone« is a typical roots song but it has a dub version too. Which makes the dub cut a dub version of a song in the roots-genre. All kind of genres can have dubs. Lovers, rockers, dancehall etc.

I don't know if you can play it at a dub night. If dub nights are strictly dub music then perhaps it would be better if you stuck to the dub version. You can find it on this record (can't remember the title but I would guess it's »Gone Dub«);

Nice one Kalcidis!! I had no idea there was a dub cut, deffinetly going to check that out.

I'm still a little bit confused, I think I have my genre's mixed up, Roots to me would be tunes like, Throw me Corn, or Get up mr Slow Poe, later than Ska but before Reggae, but this doesn't sound like those kinds of tunes, is it maybe not early dance hall? or just Reggae? I'm probably mudling things up, I guess it doesn't matter, it would just be nice to know so I'm looking for the right kind of music.

I'm not so sure how I feel about playing (Strictly) Dub, if it means I couldn't play a tune like this then maybe I'm heading in the wrong direction. I probably dont have enough expierience but I think the odd heavier roots? track could really sound good in a Dub set, if it was well placed, plus if it works well for a Dub mix, then why not for a Dub set as well?

I think you've mixed it up a little. Reggae is the name of the genre where roots is a sub-genre. Roots, dub, lovers, dancehall, dub-poetry, rub-a-dub etc etc are all different variations of reggae. Ska and rocksteady is the music that reggae evolved from.

A pretty good explanation of the various terms and sub-genres can be read at Wikipedia;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggae

I'm thinking you're after deep minor chord roots. Ie. roots that sound heavy. There's tons of wonderful productions in this style from both the 70's and 80's. (even 90's up to today - even though those eras aren't really focused on at Roots-Archives).

With you.

Maybe it falls between genre's, it does have these two halves - second half is Rub a Dub isn't it? and the first half like you said minor key roots (yes)? but I cant find anything similar within either of those genres.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate them.

it's a roots tune, featuring if i'm not mistaken a drum pattern of the rockers variety, with lovers lyrics and a DJ cut....

the DJ is Captain Charghand.12" version clocks in at 5'40.

Those feelings i use to get
When we were out at nights
Like a smoke from a cigarette
Oh it's all gone,it's gone gone gone

Plans that we were making up
All those are all broken up
Like a dream when you're waking up
It's gone gone gone

Good things we shared a lot
Like how we cared a lot
Like steam from a coffee pot
It's gone gone

Oh you don't know, you don't know
How i really love you so
But everything is gone
It's gone gone gone................

*- Brrrm brrrm brrrm
- Gimme a lif' now, Chargie!
- Weh yuh a go?
- Jus' dung the frontline.
- Jump in now, daughta.*

Perhaps you should check out other songs by Leroy Brown. His most known roots song is probably Colour Barrier;

Then there are many other groups/artists doing heavy roots that you might enjoy. I've always been a fan of the Twinkle Brothers;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWxhfqHXdgM (Faith Can Move Mountain)

Then there are producers that did some seminal roots productions. Such as the late and great Yabby You;

There are thousands and thousands of good and deep roots songs. Just listen to a lot of roots and if you like it check more stuff from the same artist and producer.
