just back from london after what was a great weekend musically. sunday night my missus and i ventured to the Eastern village, shoreditch, ec2, to catch the rootikal show. on the bill was the legendary channel one and fatman sounds, with a live p.a by nerious joseph, and the rootikal crew. a seriously good nite, with very strong roots selections by all behind the decks, with the dj stuart patterson dropping a super set with a lot of my favourite songs,by ijahman, wailing souls, burning spear etc. the place was rocking, and the crowd loved it. worth checking out this venue as they run every month from 2 pm till 2.30 am. for 5 quid, well worth it if your in london. their next session features:
david rodigan, ashley beedle, live p.a by afrikan simba, also, earl gateshead, prince terralox, stuart patterson, david katz, mr faso and nick b. just noticed this one finishes at 12.30am. check it.
on the monday night we went to the brixton academy to catch bere's hammond, the heptones and gregory isaacs.
no show by gregory. but with all respect to him, the crowd were really there to see bere's, and after some warm up acts (including a guy called leroy jones who done a great gregory impression), the heptones came on and really got the crowd moving. a quick tour through some of their greatest hits over the years. leroy sibbles playing bass on some of their classic riddims.
top job. then came bere's hammond, and the gal's just went crazy. i have to say i have a few bere's albums, and i think he's a great singer, but live he's amazing. what a voice. and no better place to see him than the academy, where the brixton people love their music and their singers. he got the reception he deserved.
so no show from gregory. shame really. hope its just a hiccup. already planning a trip back to the uk for later in the year.
