playing guitar alot on my own i often use this technique, or a variation where you play a melody on the first 3 strings in between the chords so it sounds like its a continuous melody with chord backing
example:

this is using first 3 strings, hands staying more or less int the chord shape with the little finger making the odd note in between. I use it as a timing practice exercise, hoping to get ever more complex melodies and still get chords on time, but so far i can only manage simple timing

Same goes for playing a bassline style riff like in the youtube vid

my attempt at 'kill the devils wife' from Scientist meets the Roots Radics, its too fast for me at this time but i shall keep practicing!

Anyone fancy demoing their techniques, vocaroo.com is prety cool for recording short things, just plug your guitar into your mic input if you have the apropriate cable/adapters?
