Hi all

***I have searched the forum with several different terms and cannot find this topic in there***

There is a monster album of Bunny Lee productions dubbed at King Tubby’s called “Bunny Lee Presents the Late Great King Tubby: The Legacy”

I was wondering if anyone knew what albums its made up of?

It has:

The Roots of Dub – King Tubby
Dub From the Roots – King Tubby
Cookin’ - Tommy McCook & The Aggrovators

There is also a Jackie Mitoo Album in there, but I can’t find a similar track list here on Roots Archive.

That still leaves about 2 or 3 albums worth of tunes on the collection, I was wondering if anyone recognised them? Of course they could just be a collection of singles?

Annoyingly most of the tracks seem to have been re-named in some way, usually by sticking the word ‘dub’ on the end .

Hope the vast reggae database of knowledge that is Roots Archive members can help me?

As far as I can make out the Jackie Mittoo album is "Showcase Vol.3" from 1979, though Roots Archives lists Jammy as engineer for that album not Tubby.

08 Hijack Stick-Up Dub (aka Jumping Jack)
09 Supercharger Dub (aka Super Charge)
10 One Step Beyond Roots Dub (aka One Step Forward).

Why is it that some companies cheat and re-name tracks when they release them, I feel a bit tricked in buying this album since I already had three albums worth of the material that was on it.

Also It can be hard when listening to dub to know if youve hear dit before eh?

Even if Tubbs were still alive, the tracks belong to Bunny Lee, the producer.

Engineers traditionally were paid a flat fee just like a session musician. Whether that was fair or not is a separate matter.

I think that I may have mentioned this before - songs that are credited solely to the producer or singer (or both)... I wonder how many of them were, in reality written by the folks who played the instruments on the recordings and only got a one-off payment for their efforts?

Ah True, about the real creators not get the money they deserve

I feel a bit burnt for buying this set of music, luckily I only paid 8 quid for it, but as I had three albums worth of the material on it already I'm still annoyed. It was released by unity records copyright Jet Star, so shame on both those companies for not labelling their product properly.

What I don’t get is if you wanted to sell a pork sausage, then it would have to have pork in it, so why are record companies allowed to miss label what they sell to us?

Well, in the absence of any fair play from the record labels that release these albums, it's up to journalists to review them with all the relevant information. Always try to find a review of a release you might think is dubious before you buy it. I, myself wrote a review of the King Tubby: The Legacy CD for Amazon UK, I don't know if there's any others on the net?
