Just wondered if there were any newer deejays (i.e. starting in the past 10 years or so) who hark back to the 'old style' of U-Roy, I Roy, Big Youth, etc. There seem to be quite a few singers who take inspiration from that era, but I can't think of any deejays.

Some of the old deejays are still around - surely there must be someone new doing that style? Modern riddims perhaps don't lend themselves to that style, though.

That'd be nice to hear imho. A nowadays deejay like Vybz Kartel chatting inna oldschool Josey Wales style over the Mad Mad/Diseases Riddim or other early 80s Roots Radics riddims for example. I'm sure he'd be capable of toasting inna oldschool fashion.

But I guess it's not going to happen, cause not many people in JA nowadays would be interested in it I think. Sadly it's all about hardcore ragga riddims and violent lyrics.

Edit: I'd say Junior Gong's Welcome to Jamrock is chatted quite slow and oldschooly over a early/mid 80s roots riddim. No other example comes to my mind though.

There's a deejay called Ranking Forest that does chat in early 80's style. He also has a song with a Jah Breeze that has a similar vibe (haven't heard to much of him though). But they're not as old school in the vibe as the ones you mention.

Thanks - great stuff. Sounds like a 70s rhythm, but if it's not, I guess there's hope for a revival of real reggae.

It's not a 70's rhythm and I don't know how I could forget that one! It's such a great song. I absolutely love that 7" with Jah Faith and I need to buy his follow up also (»No Bother Grumble«). A showcase LP from Jah Faith would be fantastic!
