The penultimate in Greensleeves’ critically acclaimed series of CD box sets spotlighting key moments in the evolution of dub. Box six shines the spotlight on legendary producer and engineer Prince Jammy, one of the pivotal figures in the history of reggae music. These four speaker-disturbing dub sets from the golden age of version include the previously unreleased "Crucial In Dub" that rounds up many sought after dubs from the era. The three other sets, "Kamizaki Dub", "Uhuru In Dub" and "Osbourne In Dub", have long been regarded as dub classics, showcasing Prince Jammy putting Black Uhuru, Johnny Osbourne, Sugar Minott etc. under heavy dub discipline. The four albums are collected together in card sleeves in a themed box that Includes a 12 page booklet featuring classic photos and images along with sleeve notes by reggae historian Noel Hawkes.

Is Crucial in Dub an unreleased LP or is it simply a round up of dub sides?

The twelve tracks from the first CD read like some compilation of versions from Jammy's showcase albums of the mid 1980s.

This arrived today for me. Haven't listened to any yet.

'Crucial in Dub' has the same artwork as the box set itself (Jammy as one of the Easter Island heads), FWIW.

I must admit that I bought the set out of curiosity regarding the first CD. All I can say now is "BUY THIS!".

Forget about 'Uhuru in Dub' or 'Osbourne in Dub' being released for the umpteenth time, get it and experience the swansong of dubmusic. The tracks on this first CD called 'Crucial in Dub' mark a moment in reggae history.

Collected for the very first time on CD are the final moments of hard driving dancehall dubs. Backed by the High Times Band, Prince Jammy put to tape some very rough and rugged but highly inspiratonal dubmixes.

These versions are different to the ones that came out on several showcase albums from around 1984-1986, like Black Crucial's 'Mr.Sonny' album (five dubversions from that alone!), Pad Anthony's 'A Yah We Deh' or Leroy Smart's 'Showcase' on Fatman Records to name just a few.

These were recorded and mixed just 'the night before' SlengTeng exploded and music like this was blown out of the studios forever.

What else do you get with this set? Well, 'Kamikazi Dub' is another classic dub album that deserves to be available at this very nice price again.

The booklet that comes with this set has a listing of 50 classic dub versions that were NOT mixed by King Tubby. Compiled by some authorities like Chris Lane, Noel Hawke, Ray Hurford, David Hendley, Ian McCann & Paul Coote. Must say that this one leaves much debate open but it made me smile more than once .

The Greensleeves website says that 'Crucial in Dub' will also come out on LP.

to bellyman: 'forget about 'Uhuru in Dub' or 'Osbourne in Dub' is a strong word from you, and need a pretty correction or better said additional info - if one of you of the Roots Archives forum readers don't own this albums, I tell you the 'Uhuru in Dub' makes alone the purchase worthwhile. This was released as artist 'Sly & Robbie' via CSA Holland wayback - (when Sly & Robbie was supposed to get superstars with Rhythm Killers' - don't forget about this time when Reggae influence was big for real).

possibly the best box in the Evolution Of Dub series so far!

this "forget about" surely has the meaning that both albums were re-released on cd at least twice before.
if the sound quality is ok this time then at least the uhuru dub set is a good one, but not because of jammy's mixing abilities (which are best ok compared to tubby) but because of the strength of the original riddims.

to be honest i don't expect much from a mid 80's dub album ("Crucial in dub"), but maybe i am proved wrong.
if it was that good, why wasn't it released back in the days ?

the kamikaze dub set was released on trojan on lp and cd before and can be rated as mediocre imho.

as the series was planned for 7 volumes i expect the 7th volume will be scientist (because they have all the early 80's scientist albums in their vaults already ....)

now it's time for greensleeves to re-release "Best dressed chicken" with additional vocals/dubs.

People weren't buying much dub in the mid-80's, and because of the reduced interest, record companies weren't releasing many dub LPs. At least compared to the late 70's and first few years of the 80's.

"Crucial" looks like a bunch of 45 B-sides, which in itself isn't a bad thing if master tapes were used, and not scratchy records.

Love the Easter Island motif!
