Gladiators "Hello Carol" Virgin 1976

This song we've heard many times, but personally, I've never heard on headphones until now. On both my Virgin CDs, Trenchtown Mix Up and the compilation Dreadlocks The Time Is Now, it sounds like another song is playing underneath. Possibly a reused master tape? Has this been common knowledge to yall, or am I just "hearing things?" Such a great song, I've just never noticed this sloppiness, either I'm not listening close or my equip is sub par, no worries though...fwiw

I even hear that issue on the CD's when I listen with headphones!

I noticed that years ago. The song playing underneath is 'Trench Town Rock' (not the BMW song),a melodica cut to the 'Hot Milk' riddim that can be found on the 'Dread Inna Babylon' LP by U-Roy. I too go for a re-used (master) tape as both LPs ('Trenchtown Mix Up' and 'Dread Inna Babylon') are Prince Tony Robinson's productions.

So it's not strictly on the CD or an issue with Virgin's pressing, it's actually originating from the source?

I guess that it does originate from the source, not from Virgin. Is it to say that the tape is a MASTER tape that has been reused by Tony Robinson? I can't really say. From what I've read here and there, overseas company operating in the '60s and '70s such as Trojan, Virgin and Island were not always given the original 2-track master tapes by the Jamaican producers. Sometimes they were given the mutitrack master tapes (which may explain why they were able to put out different mixes than the original Jamaican records) and it's not impossible to think that some producers gave copies of the masters instead of the original master tapes. These copies may have been used for secondary storage before and had other songs on it that have not been completely deleted due to magnetic remanence.

haaaa, it's there! what a funny discovery, you only hear it when you listen very closely. must be a reused tape. Blessed, good topic. any other records have this same problem?
