Why limit editions?
Why is it - apart from the most obvious reason....that so many re-issues nowdays are made in such limited numbers? "Only 500 copies" "Very limited edition". Is it just another side of the "ultra-rare" of E-bay?

I would say that there is no more market and its a way to make the thing more attractive. But in no way it means it will not be repressed again!

Also I think it has to do with people wanting to know that they can move all copies and not get stuck with a high percentage unsold.

I'm sure they're trying to appeal to collectors. Seems trendy these days...

Many of these companies negotiate vintage releases based on a fixed run. Rather than pay a pre-determined royalty and press as sales require over a fixed period of time, they agree on the total number pressed, and pay a one-time pressing fee.
It also gives the impression that it will be worth money one day, and this appeals to those who are in the collecting game for profit speculation, as opposed to collecting for the love of music.

Re: Why limit editions?
not a lot of demand for vinyl these days ... press 500 as a start and if they sell fast press some more and it's also just a number to fool us in to buying it ... only 500? damn that must be good ... must have one ... now!!!

Thanks all for your comments. Personally I think it's mostly a promotion trick - that had success with me a few times, I must admit....

Why limit editions?
Because people do not order vinyl at there recordsshops.
And recordsshops owners will not order vinyl affaird that those albums will not sell.
Please support reggae labels and your local recordsshops to keep the vinyl alive.
Other wise it will be only for the true collectors of music in general. "limit editions of vinyl pressing"
Other music collectors will buy cd's or mp3 files no problem with that.
