Delroy Wilson album 'Dub Plate Style' released 8th August 2009
24th June 2009

Album Title: Dub Plate Style
Artist: Delroy Wilson
Remixed by: Prince Jammy
Release Date: 8th August 2009
Format: Single CD/Double Vinyl

Delroy Wilson was undoubtedly one of the truly great voices of Jamaican music. He started recording in the early sixties and continued singing songs that mattered right up to his untimely death in 1995.

All the tracks on ‘Dub Plate Style’ were originally released in early 1978 on a double album entitled ‘20 Golden Greats’ with no real indication of what might be in the grooves. The set appeared on Count Shelly’s London based Third World label and was never pressed in Jamaica. It sold in very small numbers then disappeared and has since become a valuable collector’s item. At first glance the material on this album might appear unremarkable. You will have seen many of the tracks on singles or on other albums and, in most cases, heard the majority of these songs sung elsewhere by Delroy. But what you will not have heard is these particular songs mixed by Prince Jammy at King Tubby’s studio. Very few singers have what it takes to work effectively over a dub mix but Delroy Wilson did so with consummate ease and Jammy’s empathy with Delroy on this set is abundantly clear.

At the time Jammy was working extensively with the producer of this album, Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee, and was at the beginning of his own production career. Totally in tune with what was currently being played out on Kingston’s sound systems these mixes were aimed directly at a sound system audience. Consequently they are mixed quite differently from other versions of the same songs. There is little gimmickry involved. By remaining respectful to the original songs Jammy has managed to deliver a different ‘take’ on what’s already there by reducing the material down to its essential elements. A little rawer. A little sparser. A little heavier. And much, much deeper…
There was a brief period, around late 1977, when it looked as if the type of sound system mixes that had always been popular with operators and selectors might actually become part of the reggae mainstream. Ever the entrepreneur Striker picked up on this potential new market and gave these recordings to Count Shelly to release. But the fashion passed and very few releases in this style ever appeared on vinyl. Truly rare and totally unique in the history of reggae this is a remix album from before the genre had become a recognised part of popular culture.

This soulful gem has been remastered from the original master tapes and the superb artwork features a selection of super rare flyers, label scans and photographs lovingly assembled by the Pressure Sounds graphics team. An album for connoisseurs from one of Jamaica’s greatest ever vocalists, Delroy Wilson, as you have never heard him before.
“This album in its own right is not only a unique achievement of a people and their music but it is a memorial in recognition for one of the most talented artists to have been born in Jamaica. For music lovers this album is a must!” Sir Dees

King Tubby & The Dynamites 19th Sept 2009
9th July 2009

Artist: King Tubby & The Dynamites

Title: Sound System International

Format: Single CD/Single Vinyl Album

Release Date: 19th September 2009

‘Sound System International’… this Clancy Eccles produced dub set is so incredibly obscure that it has even the most serious collectors scratching their heads. The set features ten early King Tubby’s deconstructions of a selection of Dynamites rhythms produced by Clancy Eccles where Tubbs spins the tunes around and comes up with something very, very special. Anyone who really wants to now what King Tubby’s mixing style was all about need look no further as he takes on these straight forward reggae songs turns them upside down, inside out and then takes them on to somewhere completely different..

The ten track vinyl album remains the same as the incredibly rare original release and includes Tubby’s dubs to Lord Creator’s evocative ‘Kingston Town’, The Dynamites’ beautiful ‘Red Moon’ and King Stitt & Andy Capp’s ‘Herb Man’. The CD echoes the origins of dub in Kingston’s sound systems and comes with five bonus tracks including ‘Phantom’ Lynford ‘Andy Capp’ Anderson’s next cut to ‘Herb Man’ one of the earliest ever dub mixes; two outings from ‘The Ugly One’ foundation deejay King Stitt including his riposte to U Roy“You say you rule the nation with version…” entitled ‘King Of Kings’ and the incredible ‘Dance Beat’ where Stitt and Clancy discuss the early days and characters of the sound system scene and finishing off with The Dynamites’ stirring ‘Tribute To Drumbago’.

Originally released in a plain white cover rubber stamped with only the title and track listing the set now comes totally re-mastered and replete with superb graphics, stunning contemporary photographs of King Tubby and extensive sleeve notes detailing the origins of the dub and deejay phenomenon. We at Pressure Sounds were thrilled to be able to negotiate the release of this awesome rarity where, for once, the hyperbole is all for real. But you don’t have to believe us… just give it a listen and see and hear for yourself!

The Clancy Eccles set was released in 1976 on Clandisc Records.

Cover was grey with the album title "Sound System International Dub" in red writing on front cover. Rear cover had track list for the album.

The label was black and white with the track titles listed.

Would this them have been a seperate later pressing after this stated blank sleeve release?

Not a big Delroy Wilson fan either. But I'm looking forward to this album as the mixing (Jammy) is supposed to be something special

@Han

Do you believe in coincidences?

It won't be too hard to tell. After that LP was purchased, it was used in a webcast. Every old piece of vinyl has artifacts even when they are cleaned up, so comparing the recording of the broadcast versus the release should reveal clue or two, if not conclusive evidence.

Nice that's finally coming out though, the dub of "Kingston Town" is the business.
