Even when Sly is playing funk he still isn't all that funky in my opinion. Maybe I don't know how to explain what I mean. There's just a slight rigidness in his playing and I tend to prefer a looser feel. Just a subjective opinion of mine.

I like them both. Big masters in the field of reggae music. Big up all those cucial drummers from the ska/rock steady -days and the reggae days. Have to mention mister Lloyd Knibb!

Sly Dunbar used to be very steady, which worked out really well in combi with Robbie Shakespear. And yes, they could sound like a machine almost.
Leroy Wallace wasn't that steady (but more elastic), and brought much more 'feeling' in his drumming than Dunbar did.
Well, just my humble opinion ofcourse.

Try and tell Horsey he is not steady and you'll see his reaction. He is amazingly steady. I've been able to check this by looking at a protools file of him and he is right on the beat.

Sure gbougard, I'll tell him next time I run into him.

I'm not dissing the man here. The only thing I'm trying to bring over is that he never sounded like a machine to me.

Guillame, how about Peter Austin from The Clarendonians? He still sings wicked and needs to be recorded! I guess you wouldn't associate him with this lineup that you're talking about, but it could be a wicked combo! Peter can sing roots or any JA sub genre for that matter! Bless!

Also, one last thing! I have a drummer friend I play with and when he went to JA at the beginning of the millenium he linked with Horsey and hung with him alot while he was there! Horsey bigged up Sly and said that he definitely got some licks from Sly! I'm sure Sly has borrowed from Horsey as well. I think it's safe to say that all these drummers are listening to each other for ideas! That's what musicians do! This is not a sports competition, it's music! Each one of these bredren have something totally unique and soulful to contribute to the music!

Again, can anyone point to an example of a song that Mikey Boo played on?

Back to Sly and Horsemouth, I think elasticity is a good word for what I was trying to say. It's a mystery how two drummers can play the same style of music and both keep time perfectly but one feels more elastic/loose and has a more funky/soulful feel while the other sounds more precise and technical. I'm thinking more of Santa than Horsey when I say that, actually. I do love Sly's drumming, don't get me wrong, but I get more excited by guys like Santa, Carly Barrett and Tin Legs. For whatever reason!

Oh, and to answer something that happened a page or so back: yes, it's silly and pointless to talk about who is "better," from an objective standpoint. But it is interesting to talk about who we prefer and why. Not the same thing, and nothing wrong with it.

Mikey Boo is on countless sessions! If you wanna see him in action, look at footage of Culture in the studio on a French Reggae documentary that came out years ago! You can see it on Youtube! Mikey Boo with Ranchie, Duggie, Ansel, etc....
