Of course if you use these Russian "legal" web services then Bunny will not receive a penny for his music... not that he would if you bought it second hand... I don't understand why Bunny doesn't make all of his back colleague available on amazon itunes etc, he clearly knows how to do as you can get some of his stuff still, he is one of the few living artists who is also the producer of his own material so he could release it all in this way and let us pay him some money. I'd personally rather put some money in Bunny's pockets that the Russians

Leroy smart is another individual who seems to be the producer of much of his own material, someone in Jamacia needs to let these guys know how easy it is to release their works on emusic, itunes and amazon and get the money directly into THEIR bank accounts without distribution companies taking a cut

I don't see these Russian sights as being any differnt from buying bootleg copies at a festival or a market stall. I won't use them because I don't want to steal music, just because of a legal loop hole

A valid point well made CB and one of great principle.

However, opportunities to hear this fabulous music are incredibly limited unless you have the original LP's (as I do btw). As such I'm happy to leave the ethical considerations for others to ponder.

I would suggest also that Bunny's deal with Shanachie has done his catalogue no favours and has only served to damage the integrity of the original releases.

I would be the first to buy the original versions of these albums should they ever be given a legit CD release. Why should one be denied the undeniable pleasure of listening to these great albums for the very first time? I'm just glad someone has taken the time convert the original LP's into digital format (Russian or otherwise)

I second CB's comment. I'd rather buy the vinyl on ebay, record it to my computer, do a quick and dirty cleanup job and possibly a remastering using audacity or similar software. Easy, and provides great intellectual satisfaction!

A few years back I came across "Rare and Unreleased" on the Revolver label. I know Revolver released a series of albums with the same title which is a bit misleading since most of the releases in questions were infact released before. Well I guess some of them will be "rare" depending on how long you have been collecting.

Anyhow, if I am not mistaken, most if not all the tracks off Rock n Groove are on the cd with their extended dubs. Then there's a few tracks from the Marketplace album. I guess that's the closest u can get to the original Lp release.

I Love the original Rock 'n Groove LP, in fact somewhere in the archives I still have the original LP, which I bought in Jamaica back in the late 1970s. For some reason the CD I have is not only disappointing (yes, I agree about the editing of the Shanachie CD), but mine has a huge gouge in it making the "Rock 'n Groove" track itself unplayable (probably due to an old roommate).

I'm going to dig out my LP, and fortunately being in the audio business I have access to some of the finest vinyl playback equipment, cables, power conditioners, A/D converters and everything I need to do a top-notch digital transfer from the original LP.

If anyone is interested in copies or helping with the project, I live in St. Louis, and the LP is here, but most of the high-end equipment I have access to (at least the vinyl portion and A/D converters), is in Toronto, Canada, where I'm originally from. I may just take the LP to Canada, but if anyone is in the St. Louis area with gear to help, feel free to reply as I will get replies via email.

And yes, I'd be happy to donate any and all proceeds to Bunny's charity of choice.

Cheers

Chris
