for me Sly is really higher. But I'm not talking about technic, just my vibe, he has genious vibe. Check all the channel one stuff with Robby. But I'm not a Roots Radics big fan in general.

I was thinking about this sort of thing, who would make up the greatest reggae band, and I remember seeing Tappa Zukie once backed by Horsemouth on drums and Professor Larry on bass, and they were great...

hi
i reeally think that sly dunbar is the most innovative and the most versatile drummer ever to surface out of jamaica.the drums have never been given such a solo role than under his emergence in the 70's.i say it as wailers(thus carly barrett)-oriented reggae fan.and i say it without any apology that if there is a group that really settled reggae in a certain monotony and thus heralded it's downfall in the 80's as regards it's roots beat is concerned,it's undoutedly the roots radics with the flat snare drums of style scott.mostly through their long time collaboration with junjo and greensleeves, who overused the rythms for several singers and djs all through the 80's.i think the reign of the radics in the 80's has been commercially benefitable for certain labels and producers(and of course for the radics who were the most-in demand reggae outfit in the 80's and through the 90's)but was damaging at an artistic point of view.i would rather go for the radics of the pre-80's with santa on drums and gladstone anderson on keyboards.
that is my opinion.iam the only liable for what i say,but iam not obliged to share the views of most of the fans in this thread.

Fadel I understand what ur saying about the Radics but them being commercial is actually NOT a negative thing, its deserving. Everybody wants to roll with the Hottest and Junjo was the man at that time even though there were other producers Like LINVAL THOMPSON who used the Radics beats well.
Another thing that was kinda dissapointing was other bands didn't step their game-up, if they did we probably wouldn't be having this conversation.

I'd start by blaming Jammy for put things "inna computer style"

I personally find the two drop feel (which I associate mainly with Radics) a tad too joyful and light. Even though there are truly scorching DREAD songs recorded with two drop feel, I can name only few that would sound better with the original two drop instead of one drop or (preferably ;) steppers feel.

Thus I personally appreciate Sly more, because of his more militant and powerful style. Roots music to me is WORD SOUND POWER, and I feel that Sly's style is more familiar with that notion.

As for Sly using syndrums etc., I have to admit that he hasn't done so successfully on every single occasion, no, but more than often enough, surely.

I gave my opinion, but I think they're both immortal as musicians and you can't really compare them. Their styles are similar at times but strikingly different most of the time. Bless all drummers that spread a positive message...
