Hi Ron
I believe I touched on this issue on a previous thread - http://www.roots-archives.com/forum/rea ... ,14793#msg -14793
As I said then;
"I bought the LP "The Way It Is" - I Kong
Top Ranking #TC082-http://www.smokeyroom.net/albums/thewayitis.htm - when it came out in 1979 on the back of the tape I had (recorded from the B&B Show in the late 70's) and was incredibly disappointed as it was neither the vocal version I had or a vocal version of the Pablo cut of "The Way" (both back to back on the B&B tape).
I recently bought "More Pressure Vol 1 (Straight To The Head)" -http://www.roots-archives.com/release/4366 - and this does have the original 1972 Ricky Storm "The Way It Is" accompanied by the original instrumental version - "The Way It Is Version". The original recording was released on Top Cat.
The 1972 song was then re-released on Top Ranking in 1979 with the Pablo cut "The Way" on the b-side."
Top Cat and Top Ranking are both Tommy Cowan labels.
Addendum - That Pablo version, "The Way", is now readily available on CD - "Life Goes In Circles (Sounds From The Talent Corporation)" - http://www.roots-archives.com/release/4607.
Incidentally, I believe that the "The Way It Is Version" is actually better than Pablo's later version "The Way". I hadn't heard the original version until fairly recently.
Also (and probably obviously) "The Way It Is" on the I Kong album of the same name is a completely different and, in my opionion, a poorer version of the 1972 original. And it isn't, as mentioned earlier, a vocal version of Pablo's "The Way" either.
Hi Bruce
The original 1972 "The Way It Is" is one of my all time favourite tracks. So atmospheric and absolutely incredible. Please pass on my thanks to your uncle for making such an amazing track.
