Maybe there's a terminology difference here, but I think I like a lot of 'new roots' but none of it is in the form of 'bands' and all of it is Jamaican artists (Or 99% at least)
There are a number of interesting and talented JA vocalists at the moment (well, actually they've been around a while)
I'm not always in the mood for it, but Anthony B, Sizzla, Steve Machete, Chezidek, Ras Shiloh, Tarrus Riley, Richie Spice, Perfect, Everton Blender and many others have all moved me at one time or another. Sorry to show my prejudice, but if it ain't Jamaican (including expats and immigrant communities) I tend not to be too interested.

i have to disagree guys. i've never been to hawaii or san diego so i dont know. but i've seen suffering anywhere else i've been to. spain, holland, england, and a few other places, all first world countries so we're told. suffering has many guises and its out there. maybe not on a mass scale but its still suffering.
who here, from anywhere around the world, has never seen people suffering in their life?
just my opinion of course

BTW i like warrior king, i wayne etc out of J.A. and a lot of the modern uk roots stuff.

Agreed on Warrior King, I Wayne, Bushman, Jahmali and others. In fact, Bushman is fantastic, but doesn't always have the best material. If he had better quality control, he'd be one of my favorites for sure. Amazing voice in the DEB tradition.

There is suffering in Hawaii. The cost of living is some of the highest in the Nation. Even people with jobs sometimes can't afford a roof.

If you think that living in the tropics is all paradise, I beg you to think of, hmmm, I don't know, Jamaica.
I hear what you are saying about "New Roots," but please give this a listen:

Though I don't share your opinion of new stuff, and have heard about equal parts Luciano I like and Luciano I hate, I agree about '79 and/or various years of the seventies. And it's astonishing, isn't it? The sheer volume of great material coming out of basically one city? I think it's got to be unprecedented. What's up with that?

luciano had some great moments, but i also have one or two albums by him and they arent great. songs like messenger, over the hills, ulterior motive, good god are great tracks. out of the uk at the moment i really like kenny knots of watch how the people dancing fame, he's totally re invented himself and puts out consistently good tunes. but its true, its hard to beat any year from the golden period, every year was a good year.

I find it really hard to get into modern roots or any of its incarnations.I am not saying i cant or wont listen to it-sometimes i enjoy a few tracks at a dance-but its just not something that does it for me.I just wouldnt choose to listen to it at home.I think a lot of it is to do with your age-the younger you are the more likely you are to enjoy it.When i was young[late 70's]i was well into punk and still have a blast of it sometimes.I have heard some'modern'punk recently and that just doesnt do it for me either.
