If Dave is referring to "Echo Dek" (and I am not 100% sure he is) Adrian Sherwood was on the board and I am pretty sure he had a vague idea of what he was doing. :)

Again, if that is the album he is referring to I am playing it at the moment and, *on a sonic level*, it sounds incredible.

Liking the music is surely another matter altogether and, yes, is a matter of opinion.

If that isn't the album he is referring to I am, as always, happy to stand corrected. :)

And I'll admit I have no clue as I haven't heard it. I do think Primal Scream is wildly overrated, though, so am predisposed to think it would be poor. Not that I don't like them at all, I just think they're more miss than hit.

One thing that seems to be ignored in these kinds of discussions is the various pieces of equipment that make up the entire studio set up of whatever producer.

So Primal Scream used Tubby's much repaired and customized board to mix in the hope of getting something of the Tubby's sound regardless of whether the sounds going into the board were anything like when Tubby, Scientist, Jammy, Smart etc. were at the controls? I don't have a problem with the intent at all. Good luck to them. I'd love to give it a go myself.
I'm all for going that extra several miles to get the results I want. Sadly can't afford the $$$ or time as I repeat ad nauseam.
However, I never hear/read any mention of Tubby's other equipment besides the aforementioned board, the Fisher reverb and probably whatever delay he used (what was that?), the cutting machine.
Was there a particular compressor perhaps?
Every piece of equipment, especially vintage will color the sound somewhat and will have a significant influence on the overall studio sound.
These days modern studios will have their equipment list proudly displayed on a website. Studios of yore didn't have that luxury.
Let's not forget the pieces of equipment that go unnoticed!
Just thought I throw that into the mix

If Leslie Kong was still alive today, what set up would he be using - Keeping with the old stuff or in a new technology set up? Would he be recording a band as a band or each instrument recorded on it`s own?

look up Graeme Goodall, i think he lives in/near Atlanta, Georgia, USA. he engineered a lot of Kong's work and was tight with the man, according to the great interview on Reggae Vibes.

cheers rob, glad you are linked with him. from all i've read and heard, he seems an A1 chap. please thank him for, well, giving me a reason to live. (no jamaican music, no hot milk)

he and a handful of others, very literally, got this whole modern JA music thing going.
