black uhuru - brutal?

With tunes like 'Let Us Pray', 'Dread In The Mountain', 'Brutal', Fit You Haffe Fit' and 'Conviction Or A Fine' this album stands strong.

Yes this album is not that bad. It sure isn't one of the best from Black Uhuru but it is ok.
A little too many "rock" alike guitars though imo.
The Brutal Dub album is not so bad too.

"Fit You Haffe Fit" is definitely strong, strong, strong, but I can't listen to the entire album very long.

As far as mid 80's digital Junior Reid goes, I'd much rather listen to Boom Shack A Lack than Positive or Brutal. And as far as Black Uhuru is concerned, I prefer Red or Sinsemilla. For some reason I just can't connect my tastes for Junior Reid and Black Uhuru.

in comparison to albums like showcase, sinsemilla or love crisis this album is far worse..but that doesn't mean that there aren't some nice songs on it...like the mentionened dread in the mountain, great train robbery..

i also like uptown girl and city vibes (the only song, that puma jones had sung). but i must confess i can't hear the album very often because i often get fed up with the rough pop/rock "brutal" sound, but now and then I enjoy some songs very much..

to me brutal is not A-Must-Have it is A-Nice-To-Have Album..Like somebody also had written here, if you didn't like the sound on anthem you will hate the sound on brutal...because it is much more rock orientated than the predecessor

brutal is simply the best non-mikal-rose black uhuru album. get it. has more great songs than not. might want to search out the great train robbery and fit you haffe fit 12" singles released around the same time for great high dynamics versions of songs included on the LP

I seem to be the only one who likes this album. I'd say get it for sure. I love the title track, fit you a fe fit, dread in the mountain, conviction or a fine, and great train robbery.

Totally agree, train robbery kinda pop, but classic album in my opinion, includes lead vocals from Puma and Duckie (which they rarely do) as well, far better than Positive with same line up.

Keep in mind year this record was made, sounds pretty roots to me, of course, digital sly & robbie styled, but... is that a bad thing? hehehe

i still think, although there are worse albums by black uhuru out there (aka positive), that this is overall not that great an album, but i'd take it over many other albums by other artists any day. it does have some hot tracks on it.
i'm actually listening to it right now.
i grew up on chill out and brutal, so there is no way i can totally dislike this record even if just for nostalgic reasons. besides, like most of us, i am a big fan of sly n robbie.
but i like mr rose's voice more than mr reid's voice. and i am not a huge fan of some of the keyboard settings used in brutal, but is just me.
i'd get the record if you have the cash laying around (or you can donate the cash to me).
