If we're including dub, then 'King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown' is a must. In addition to being (probably) the only dub track that non-dub aficionados will have heard of, it charted in the UK Top 40 (only dub piece to ever chart, IIRC) and I think it was voted as the best dub of all time by some magazine or other a while back...

Nice !
Appreciate all answers and explanations as well...
Keep on...
ABYSSINIANS - SATTA MASSAGANA
Covered hundreds of times by Reggae singers/bands, that means something, simply essential.
PETER TOSH - LEGALIZE IT
Militant... one the most known phrases ever. Crucial.
I would love someone releasing this kinda "Best of Reggae" album, well-selected and real historically important Reggae songs, maybe basic for us (Roots-archivers) but a good start for non fans.

One of my personal favorites would be Rod Taylor- His Imperial Majesty, but since you mentioned songs that also cross over, i would say Barrington Levy- Black Roses. Also one of my favorite Barrington songs, but I as well have played this for many non reggae fans and they love it, not to mention I have heard this riddim sampled in hip hop too.

Whenever I hear No Woman No Cry it always makes me laugh. when I was a teenager, I was in the queue at my local chip shop, there was a drunk bloke in there who kept singing 'No chips and No Pies' to the tune of No Woman No Cry, I don't know why, but 35 odd years later it still makes me chuckle.Funky Punk wrote:Bob Marley - No Woman No Cry (live version)?
Another obvious must. Ubiquitous song.

Yes funkypunk, police and thieves was a big influence on me in the 1970s.Some kids at school played this song on a cassette in the school corridor.
But as this has been nominated already, I nominate Bob Marley..One Love...lets get together.A great song.
