2 ways of looking at it: (a) the positive way. The guys are alive and well. They put on pajamas and sing outdoors a ridiculous song with no shame. In one word, they understand life is too short to take it too seriously.
(b) the negative way: Here is a cult 70's band that is promoted with a grotesque remake of Sam Cook's hit from way back then, hoping to cash in via the reggae treatment. The slavery theme, a serious one, is disconnected from the upbeat fun tempo, and the song is one of the worst I've ever heard from this group, weakening the cult image built via the magic 70s era. They would have been better off remaking Reggae Night from Jimmy Cliff.

It's a bit of both, as usual. Respect to all, and to Congos, cerain better stuff in included in the album.

:D

Sad to see how accessible these reggae stars have become, though. Falling into the greedy hands of producers who hope to make some money by buying some big names for small money (and ridiculous "bright ideas" like red-gold-green pajamas and an unecessary cover). But the vibes is not here, neither is the vision. And without vision, the music perishes. And our ears suffer !

This cover may not be a good choice to start promote an original new album. It may not be that good (not talking about the clip :)
But when I listen to a recent tune like "Revolution", I have to say that the vibes is here and the quality too. This is, by far, not as good as their average 70's songs (just because of the SOUND, first) but still a solid well-sung composition IMHO.

If I remember well, on the promotional video where the Congos are in studio with Scratch and Clive Hunt and the musicians, we can hear Cedric Myton singing excerpts from two songs : to me that sounds pretty good. Cedric did sing the first one on stage on wednesday, and I enjoyed it. Watty covered (again) Rainy night in Georgia and it was well sung too. If the album is not 50% covers the result can be interesting.

I liked the recording, obviously no one can be as good as their prime, thats how life works. This recording is new to me, when watching/listening to the original version of Sam Cooke - Chain Gang, thought I`d wikipedia the artist out of interest -

Cooke was shot and killed at aged 33, 1964 by a hotel manager who claimed he had attempted to assault her. The guy was found wearing only a sports jacket and shoes, the rest exposed, WTF! if this is true, then it looks as though he attempted to rape the female manager, strange hey.
